Calling All Whippet Racers?

Whippet racing?
I'm going to break in my whippet for racing..
I have rang a club who has explained what will be needed to join and breaking stuff..
But for all those whippet racers..
Does it affect their behaviour?
I mean..they will always have a natural prey drive but in genral...will they change?

NOt really, that enormous prey drive is inborn. My guys are still sweet, obedient (mostly) dogs who sleep on my bed - even if they give you the impression they are cujo's cousin behind the start box (amazing almost split personallity).

Of course then there is the "going bannas with enthusim" when they learn what this is about (one of my dog in his youth, would run the uval track & then run immedatly from the finish acroos the infield to start box & try to get back in to run again)
Remember to have the dog well used to chasing the lure & so intent on it they wouldn't notice a bomb going off before running them in company (more dogs have been ruined by rushing that step than I care to think of)
You can train the muzzle at home on the sofa by holding it over the face for ONE Second - PRAISE, then 2 seconds (making sure to distract them eating up lotts of loving for those 2 seconds) and so on....
have fun

Lure coursing doesn't adversely change their behavior. I don't know about track racing.

Good for you, you are going to let your dog do the thing she was born to do and she will be a happier dog for it.

I used to go with and old guy and his whippets and let them play at chasing a lure, (not proper racing) and it was great fun, the dogs had a great time and we had great fun with them. I also know a guy who sets up a lure on some local playing fields for his lurchers and greyhounds, again they have a great time.

So many sight hounds spend most of their life on lead due to either leash laws (is that what you call it in the US?) or because owners are fearful (often rightly so) that they will take off and hunt down someones cat and it is great that you are going out of your way to fulfill her desire to run very fast after a prey item (lure) in a safe and controlled environment.

Again, good for you! I hope you and your dog have a ball!!

But to answer your question it shouldn't affect her behaviour in general as you will be doing this in an completely different environment to the on she usually walks and lives in.
