Help, Problems with Whippet Puppy injections and training?

Hi,

Me and my partner have just taken in a 10 week old Whippet pup. We are loving every minute with her but we are finding the house training difficult. The thing is, We took the pup after her previous owners adult Whippet was to rough with her and we were all worried about her been hurt. Because it was so rushed we didnt have alot of time to prepare. We have most things sorted like registering with a vet, Insurance, Injections booked.
Our main worry is the injections. We live in a flat and dont have a back garden or anywere we can be 100% sure will be alright to let her outside. We know its going to be about 3 weeks before we can take her out, But how are we meant to house train her. At the moment we are having to use paper and everything we have read, Says to use a crate. But how can we use the crate if we cant take her outside.
We only want whats best and would be grateful for any help.

Thanks, Phil and Shelley.

We cant take her outside because she hasnt had her injections yet. We are getting the 1st one done tomorrow and the next one 2 weeks from then. The vet said until her immune system is okay and she has had the final injection, It is not safe for her to go outside where other dogs may have been. We took her on short notice because she wasnt safe were she was and she would have ended up in a rescue centre!

I'm only asking for advice because we want whats best for her.

Hi, it takes A LOT of patients I'm afraid! If as soon as you see the signs (circling sniffing the floor) that usually means they need to go... quickly pick her up and put her on the papers or training mat! as soon as she does his number 1 or 2 praise her no end! Dont get her too excited though or could defeat the object.
I found that putting news papers over puppy pad helps (puppy pads are great but pricey!!)

1- you don't go through so many puppy pads which are quite expensive!! and
2- if you take the paper up (i know this may sound a bit rank) but leave the pad with some wee on it NEVER POOP! and put new papers on top she will be able to smell where he went to wee last time and go in the same spot again! I had my 2 pups at 8 weeks which is twice the trouble to toilet train!! By the time they were 12wks they were both toilet trained to go on the papers/mats, 16 wks they were fully trained to go outside!!
She will get the hang of it, but at a young age they have such small bladders and anything that goes in comes out rather quickly!!! Trust me it works but takes time! I think it鈥檚 possibly not the best to have a dog in a flat especially if it doesn鈥檛 have regular outside access.

PS. You should NEVER hit or spank your dog!!! or by no means RUB HIS/HER NOSE IN IT!!! that鈥檚 just teaching them you are upset that he has been to the toilet and could cause all sorts of problems such as hiding when going to the toilet (behind the sofa etc) so she doesn鈥檛 get hit!! And also teach your dog that he should be used to being hit and could make him aggressive!! Please don鈥檛 hit, REWARD is the best learning way!! And any good dog trainer will tell you that!!!

um..if you cant take her outside to potty, at least 4-5 times day. being so young. then find another home for her

I don't understand why you can't take her outside????

House training takes lots of time and repeating the same schedule every day. It will not happen over night. Puppies at that age do only a couple of things... Eat , Sleep, Play and Potty.... And their attention span is real short. It took my Boxer pup ( we got him at 6 weeks ) and he was finally house broke by the time he was 5 months old...
She really needs to be walked outside couple times a day.

you obviously have not thought of the responsibilities of owning this animal
you need to walk it 4 to 5 times a day early morning and late at night before you go to bed
the use of the crate is for it to sleep in at night when your asleep
this prevents it from weeing on your carpet
you then take it out as soon as you get up
when your out put it in the crate but don't leave it all day
get advice from a local puppy training class

I don't know what you mean use a crate your doing the right thing at the moment admittedly its going to be hard to house train anyway in a flat .once she starts going outside she may pick up training quite easy you have an intelligent breed and with lots of encouragement from you you will get there in the end

I will second Carly G's answer. Try using newspaper for now.

She is still young and will house train quickly once you have things set up for her to go outside.

You can take her outside so long as she isn't going on ground that a lot of others dogs go to, if you have a communal area take her there, I have a friend who has 3 Whippets and also lives in an apartment, she takes them out 4-5 times every day, more than that with a pup as you have to take out as soon as they wake/finish eating or drinking/stop playing and sometimes in between, by all means put her into a crate at night and if you are going shopping but at this age please do not leave her in it during the day for more than 3 hours max!
Good luck with your puppy.

As a whippet mommy myself, I can tell you that you need to train young. You are OK to take the pup out to potty if you go somewhere that isn't overused by stray or wandering dogs. NEVER go to the dog park un-vaccinated, that would be bad. But to go outside to the grass, no problem. Crate train, crate train, crate train, do I need to say it again? You CAN take her out, and ask your vet for advice on going outside if you aren't 100% sure. You are lucky to be blessed with such a wonderful breed. Congrats and best wishes!

Hey!
You can get Puppy Training Pads at your pet shop and I found they really work. Dont leave pup for long periods unsupervised with the pads because when bored they will rip them up, but it deals with the smell and the pup will be atracted to use the pad because it is impregnated with a chemical attractent. Once pup can go out, take the pad outside with her. I did this with my whole litter and it was great! Good luck, you sound like nice people!

i don't understand is her immune system compromised?is that why u can't take her outside?i have a 11 month old whippet that i brought home from the breeder across the state at 6 months old,we stoped every couple of hours and let him out to potty,he's just fine. keep her on the lease and take her out side to potty. also go to world of whippets.com and sign up to join the chats u will be able to learn much more about whippets from them then just asking in yahoo.
