Long-haired Weimaraner?

Anyone has a long-haired weimaraner?
I have a 2YO long-haired weimaraner.
Most dogs will sort off mature & calm down by the age of 2.. But my weim is still such a baby.
Hes super-hyper active and an absolute chore when i took him out for walks.. He's dragging me instead.
And very very stubborn....
My husband is very firm with him cos my weim is very stubborn.
Im more lenient so he always gets away with everything with me.
At what age does a weimaraner calms down a little and behave more maturely?

Aw, a long-haired Weim! I've heard that they are very rare, I'm sure he is a stunner! Well, all dogs are different and will mature when they are ready. Most dogs will mature by the age of 2 or 3 but some breeds (Labrador Retriever for example), may take years or may never "mature" like an adult. Does he get enough exercise, attention and play time? Some dogs will become hyperactive if they aren't given sufficient exercise and attention. I'd love to get a Weim but with 3 indoor cats, I may have a bit of trouble ;-)

Sophy, the long-haired Weimaraner is much rarer than the short-haired Weim but there is such thing - they are not a mixed breed!

DOGS AGE 2 THROUGH 7: These dogs are beginning to settle down and mature.
They usually have had some sort of obedience training. They need lots of exercise
and are looking for direction and companionship and enjoy doing things with their
people.

DOGS 7 AND ABOVE: These dogs have a hard time losing their homes and are
anxious to bond with someone again. They are more mellow and less active and are
really the best to adopt. They can be easy to live with in many ways can integrate
more quickly into your life because of their maturity and eagerness to fit in. Every
day is special to them.

"Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs, but are also suitable home animals given appropriate training. They are aloof to strangers, and must be thouroghly socialized when young to prevent aggression. From adolescence, a Weimaraner requires extensive exercise in keeping with an energetic hunting dog. No walk is too far, and they will appreciate games and play in addition. An active owner is more likely to provide the vigorous exercising, games, or running that this breed needs. Weimaraners are high-strung and easily excitable, requiring appropriate training to learn how to calm them and to help them learn to control their behavior. Owners need patience, as this breed is particularly rambunctious during the first year and a half of its life. Like many breeds, untrained and unconfined young dogs often create their own diversions when left alone, such as chewing house quarters and furniture. It should never be forgotten that the Weimaraner is a hunting dog and therefore has a strong, instinctive prey drive. Weimaraners will tolerate cats, as long as they are introduced to the cats as puppies, and many will chase and frequently kill almost any small animal that enters their garden or backyard. In rural areas, most Weimaraners will not hesitate to chase deer or sheep. However, with good training, these instincts can be curtailed to some degree."

Your Weimaraner needs a lot more exercise. YOU need to work on Basic training with him also. If you don't take charge now he won't mind you later own.

He has a lot of energy that needs to be released in the right way and this will help him calm down. He also needs mental stimulation in the right way to occupy him.

Some behavior comes out just because he knows that he can get away with it from you.

they kind of don`t !
weimeraners are very active and will only really calm down as their body slows down so your looking at him being about eight or nine before that happens !
why not try agility with him will be something he enjoys and give you a way of making him focus on what your asking him to do

no such breed as a long haired weimeraner,, i do believe.. perhaps a mix with some long haired retreiver??

Ok i didnt even realise there was such a thing as a long haired weimeraner, but there you go, there are. They dont calm down im afraid, a friend of mine has one and its an absolute nut, a gorgeous one but a nut nontheless. BTW its 8 years old. They are a very stubborn breed, very intelligent, so training is easy, but repetative training can bore them and they will get obstreperous if they think something is stupid or boring.

i can help with the walking part, just have a chocke chain (or his collar) all the way up on his neck, behind the ears and jaws, he shouldn't pull anymore. also making the dog sit before he goes inside or out or gets food, itll help with obediance, i do this with my dogs, and they are the most behaved dogs ive seen

A long coat on a Weimeraner is not seen often because it is incorrect, so breeders will try NOT to breed it.
From the Standard:
Coat and Color
Short, smooth and sleek, solid color, in shades of mouse-gray to silver-gray, usually blending to lighter shades on the head and ears. A small white marking on the chest is permitted, but should be penalized on any other portion of the body. White spots resulting from injury should not be penalized. A distinctly long coat is a disqualification. A distinctly blue or black coat is a disqualification.
