Weimaraner: suggestions as to how to stop her crying and barking when left alone in house? |
she is a 15 week old weimaraner and she cries like mad when we leave her. we have tried leaving the radio on, toys are easily accessable, we leave some treats for her on the kitchen floor and we've even left a ticking clock underneath her bedding. its starting to annoy our neighbour which is subsequently affecting my girlfriend now. is it just a matter of time before our dog gets used to being on her own or are there any "tricks of the trade" that we could try. I have patience so i don't mind what to try, shame my neighbour hasnt any patience. thank you Weims are known to be prone to separation anxiety. Go online and research this a bit. If you don't have a crate for her yet, buy one. Also try draping a blanket over her crate, she won't notice passage of time or be able to see anything, it also makes it more cozy and comforting for her. The other thing is what do you do when you come home, and what does she do? If she is bouncing off the walls you need to ignore her when you come home until she calms down, then play with her. That way she gets rewarded for calm behavior. I don't know what radio station you have it on, but try a talk radio rather than one that plays music. First of all it has nothing to do with "Weimaraner". It is just what puppies do when left alone. It's called training and there is NO substitute for it. You need to go to a certified animal trainer and have them teach YOU how to deal with a puppy. You obviously haven't had a young pet before and need to learn the patience and ways to aproach that specific breed of dog. it can help if you show her that you will be back. walk out the door count to 5 then come back in do this about 5 thims each time make it longer. hope it helps Try leaving her your "weekend" sweat shirt on her bed -- an old one that you have worn. She will smell you while alone, so she isn't quite so alone. good luck. kisses to pup if you are leaving her all day while you both work then it is unlikely to get better. In fact it will get worse as she starts to destroy your home. This is a very highly active working breed. Do you have a cage for her? expensive answer: dog trainer Why oh why are people such as yourselves surprised when a very young puppy makes a fuss when they are left on their own for hours on end??? what on earth do you expect???!!! I'm assuming you got this pup at eight weeks old? so you have had it exactly 7 weeks!! It's still getting used to not being with it's mum and litter mates, I'm not suggesting that it remembers them but up until 7 short weeks ago it had COMPANY it has gone from being with a 'pack' of perhaps 8 or 9 + mum down to 3 including itself to being left totally alone!! How the heck would you feel??? poor little sod! Her new pack leaves her in the morning and she is alone and has no idea if they are ever coming back, she is still in a relatively strange environment, if you work full time both of you, calculate how many hours this little soul is left on her own! take into account that you have to travel to and from work, you may stop off for a bit of shopping on the way home get held up in rush hour traffic etc, you get home perhaps at between 6-7pm and then maybe you want to go out in the evening that's another 3-4 hours, You Can't leave a puppy at home all day on it's own and not expect problems, I feel so sorry for your neighbours I hope you realise that they are perfectly within their rights to report you to the relevant authority's?! I apreciate that folk need to work, I have 3 big dogs and work 3 hours a day, they are never left for more than 4 hours at a time, if I need to go out twice in one day then I make certain that I spend at least 2 hours with them for exercising them and training and just being with them, you really should try employing someone to go and play with your pup and take her in the garden as how do you hope to keep her clean in the house? |
