Questions about the Saluki dog?

I always loved the Saluki and so far everything I've read about them says that thye are very quiet and calm. I've also read if they see something and run, they may not come back, is this true? And my other question, what kind of house enviornment would be good for them? Would they get along with other dogs, I've heard they don't like dogs that are too playful.

One more question, do you have to be very strong to handel this kind of dog? I know they are very big dogs, but are they hard to handle on a lesh, I know if they see like a cat run or something they might pull the lesh but would it be enough to drag a person with them.

Salukis are a very calm laid back breed. But, they are a Sight Hound. They are independent and will run, especially if they see something to chase. They can be very hard to teach a reliable recall. They are not dumb, but, have a mind of their own. They are usually very light and easy on a leash. They don't weigh as much as a lot of dogs their height, but, they can jerk the leash out of your hand if you are not paying attention.
Here is the web address of the Saluki Club of America, lots of good info.

Any hound should never be let off lead unless in a safely enclosed area. Sight hounds will chase. Scent hounds will put their nose to the ground and follow it. It's what they're bred to do and when they're doing it they don't pay attention to anything else. The least of what could happen is your pet quite simply getting lost. If you live in town then it's also quite likely that your dog will get hit by a car while single mindedly following it's intended prey. Sight hounds are also notorious for catching neighborhood cats that come into the yard.

SOrry, I can't answer your other questions. While I have experience with sight hounds, I don't know much about the Saluki itself other than that they are beautiful, graceful dogs.

You can teach sight hounds to walk peacefully on a leash without chasing every squirrel and cat it comes across. It's not really any harder than any other dog if you are consistent about it.

well they probably would come back eventually, my shibas a hunter and she comes back, after a couple hours but i doubt they are that strong, they look very light, and gos tht are hard to handle are dogs that way over 200 pounds like mastiffs or danes

and charlene, ive seen him answer a lot of questions, i think on different accounts, and they are ALL like this one, I think its some little prick kid, i think he/she needs to get a life
