Any saluki owners out there?

What's it like owning a saluki? I mean dealing with the whole training, socializing, exercising, and independence thing.

I don't own Salukis but I've been around plenty. I knew people that got a good Saluki from a very good breeder. They tried everything to really socialize the dog....they had it stay with friends and handed it's leash to people at dog events so strangers (to the dog, not to the owners) would walk him often.

At a certain age, he still got shy and spooky with strangers. Not really bad, but not like they'd hoped he'd be. His inate Saluki-ness could not be trained out :)

They can be trained. I'm on a Sighthound Obed. list on Yahoo. They do best with positive training with firm, fair handling. They have a super strong chase instinct of course.

Why not go to the akc site and search for a local breed club or go to http://infodog.com and search for a show near you....go to the show and meet some Salukis in person.

And NO Salukis are not faster than a Cheetah. They do have amazing endurance. I love watching them run at lure courses. GHs are the fastest on a straight run, but they will tire sooner than a Saluki. Whippets can out corner almost anything.
