How do i get my saluki dog to stop running away?

Also, I'm not a redneck, so he could'nt have seen deers and stuff, and he is only off the leash in fenced in areas.

Stop letting your saluki off the leash!! Salukis are sight hounds and when a sight hound sees anything at all in the distance, they're gone. And with their speed, they'll be hit by a car long before you can catch them.

You'll also find that you can't overcome thousands of years of genetics by taking him to an 8 week obedience course. Can't be done. Keep your dog safe and don't let him off leash in any unfenced area.

don't chase him! It makes it a game.

take him to a dog park and let him have fun. Work on him coming back to you at the park after he has ran around and tired himself out.

We keep our dogs in a fenced area with locks on all gates to keep any neighbors from opening it (that happened and dog got killed). If she digs holes put stones and bricks in the hole and bury it or moth balls (they don't like the scent). Block what ever way she has of escaping. Make sure she has collars and tags or a microchip or if your in some areas a tattoo.

tell him pedro will treat him well give him whole milk instead of skim cause im sure hes not fat lmao

This dog was bred to hunt animals that weren't dogs, so most likely your dog saw a gopher, rat, deer, rabbit, or any other animal, and with its instinct, tried to chase it. Try supervising it and don't chase it, or else it will think your playing chase. Try getting a fence or supervising.

You have not given any details.....when is he running away, how is he getting away????

Salukis are not easy dogs to train. For now don't let him run away. Keep him on a leash outside. Call him to you, give him a small treat and let him go wander again...call again, treat and release. If he understands that coming to you means good things and not that the fun/walk/playtime is over he'll be more likely to come to you.

If he's getting out, then fix your fences. Make sure to use a martingale collar so he cannot slip out of his collar. Microchip him and register your info.

Contact your local Saluki club and find other Saluki owners so you can learn more about the breed. Talk to your dog's breeder also.

Practice recalls on a long lead once he's coming well on a short leash. A flexi can work well for this. I don't like them normally. Many owners let their dogs off leash too soon, before the dog has a solid recall.

Also make sure the dog is getting plenty of exercise. Find out if there is any Lure Coursing near you....most Sighthounds love chasing the lure ( a plastic bag).

There is a Yahoo Group for Sighthound Obedience. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Sight...

Salukis can be trained, it takes patience and persistence.
Even in the desert when hunting they still are expected to come back to their owner or they could not be used to hunt.

There are probably Saluki groups on Yahoo as well that may have better Saluki info.

yeaa i have a site that explains it.

My dog did that a lot, what i did was to take her to the park run all she whats, Now when i bring her back she just stay inside the house with no problem i open the door and she just follow me outside and come back in. Before she will be just in the door waiting for somebody to open the door. Take your dog to the park let it be free.

Never take him out not on a leash, never let him out in an area that is not fenced.

Claim the door. When your dog approaches the door at any time, you jump in front of him and send him away from the door. You OWN that door and teach him that he doesn't get to go anywhere near it unless you let him. You will then be able to walk in and out of that door and he will not be bolting for it

Training the dog not to try to beat you out the door (any doorway) will solve your problem. With the dog on lead make the dog sit and wait for YOU to lead the way.
Problem you are running into is that you cannot correct a dog for running away (you will always end up correcting the dog when it comes back). So you need to create the command that the dog understands it is being corrected for not obeying (sit).
