I need guinea pig info?

Well, I am getting a piggy and I need any info and all the info you guys know

Ok. This is going to be long, but you want all the basics, then I'll give em to ya.

Personality

Guinea Pigs at first, have a shy and cautious personality. But if cared for correctly, they are extremely friendly and lovely. Daily handling should do the trick.

Diet

Guinea Pigs don't eat pellets in the wild, so give your guinea pig a LOT of variety. Set up a SMALL bowl of pellets, and tha big dish of lettuce, carrots (guinea pigs absolutley LOVE carrots!!), lettuce stumps, apples, and pears. DO NOT feed your guinea pig to much. The noraml amount daily is: about 1 lettuce stump and two slices of apple, or two big leaves of lettuce and 4 baby carrots, or one large carrot. DO NOT feed your guinea pig celery, as it will cause diarhea (learned that the hard way), and NEVER give your guinea pig dairy products, rabbit pellets (or any pellets, to be safe), meat, mineral wheels, and mixed pellets with dyed pieces. Alphalpha (hay) cubes are also a big treat for guinea pigs, but only give one to your guinea pig twice a week, as this is a sepcial treat. There should always be a guinea pig/rabbit/hamster water bottle connected to the cage. Change the water twice a week. Don't use water dishes!!

Choosing your guinea pig

I strongly suggest you buy your guinea pig from an animal shelter. If you can't, then go to a breeder, or a TRUSTED petstore, like Petco. If you find any of these signs on your guinea pig, don;t buy it:

Runny nose
Pale coat
long nails/teeth
Fur loss

There really isn't any particular breed of guinea pig that's best for you, so just get what you think would make the best pet (in other words, pick whatever healthy one you want).

Daily/weekly Care

Everyday, you can take your guinea pig into the tub and play around with it, using a carrot or maybe some sort of obstacle. Every month, give your piggie a bath, and after, when the nails are softest, cut the nails, especially when they are curled under. Cut nails every week, and insert a pet ear cleaner drops into its ear. When giving bath, DO NOT wet the head. Use only pet shampoo/soap.Let your piggie dry in the bath with a carrot for about 15 to 20 minutes (Note: Great time to clean the cage :D). Clean your piggies' cage every week, placing wood chips (wood chips made for animals, of course). Note: ALWAYs, when buying a cage, take out the bottom because it can damage their feet. Don't use cedar, sawdust, or fabrics as the bedding. Hay, pine, and plain chips are really well. I use plain chips. If your piggies teeth are long (inch or longer), buy a safe, guinea pig chew block. MAKE SURE ITS DIGESTABLE!

How to completley SPOIL your Piggie

When your cleaning your guinea pigs cage, you can take the top cage off, leaving the bottom to be cleaned (if its detachable). Put the top part outside in some nice fresh grass. Put your guina pigs house (yes, guinea pigs love houses) with it, and your piggie. Don't forget the water bottle! Your piggie will LOVE to chew on the fresh grass, just be sure to do this before you mow your mow your lawn, and don't even put it outside if you use pesticides or whatever on your grass. Leave your guinea pig outside (O I forgot, only put your piggie out in summer) until sunset, when it gets a bit chillier.

Well,
You will need to get all the supplies.
*Do you have a cage, bedding, water bottle, food and treats, and vitamins/shampoo/medicine?
*Guinea pigs will need vitiman c drops in their water daily.
*clean their cage every week.
*feed and water them every day.
*you can bathe them but they usually take care of that.
*buy them lots of toys and play with them daily.
*never hit them or hurt them.

Well, guinea pigs are very good pets. We had two, but one died from extreme lack of calcium. You are suppused to put vitamines in their water that you can buy at your local pet shop. Also, you are supposed to feed them about a handful of alfalfa or timothy hay, I can't remember wich is better for them. Plus a cup of fresh veggies and a small scoop of g-pig food, you can also buy this at your local pet shop. If they start sounding funny (weezing, coughing/sneezing ALOT, choking, etc.), or looking sickly, you should make an appoint ment with your vet as soon as possible. We love our g-pigs and I hope you love yours too. Good luck with the new pet ~ 鈾illieBobJoe鈾?/div>

Aww congrats for when you get your piggy! Your so lucky! I have owned 4.

First thing is first. Get an indoor cage, NOT an outdoor hutch.
Unofrtunately I lost 2 of my piggies when I was 10, as they lived in a hutch in our garden and one day a fox broke into the hutch. We lost Monica, but found Phoebe but she died later on due to her injuries/shock. =(

Although saying that, you will need a run that u can put on the grass on nice days so your piggies can play out side in the sunshine and munch on grass. However do not feed the piggy grass that has already been mowed. (IE. Like emptying your lawnmower into their foodbowl.)

Make sure you have a big enough foodbowl and waterbottle. And make sure these are topped up EVERYDAY.

Clean the cage about twice a week. Put paper on the bottom of the cage, then a layer of sawdust. And then some hay or straw for where the piggy will sleep.

Make sure you will always have someone to pigsit when you go away for more than a day.

You can bathe them with special shampoo but this is not necessary as they clean themselves. Also, one time I bathed my piggy called Pepsi and he peed himself as soon as he got in the water =(

Dont put two male piggies together, as they can fight. But 2 females are fine. And also a piggy and a rabbit usually get on well. When your piggy is meeting a new friend for the first time, make sure the meet in neutral territory (IE. Not their cage) as they can get possessive.

Also, only make sure you can afford a Guinea Pig if you can afford the vet bills. It is unlikely your piggy will need vet attention if looked after properly, but it can happen.

Good luck with your piggy, I hope your very happy with him/her.
=)

Guinea Pigs are sociable creatures and should really only be kept in pairs. You will need a strong cage, hay-don't use straw as it can jab their eyes and cause ulcers - Water bottles and food dish, guinea pig food and a run for use in the summer. Guinea Pigs need vitamin c every day either in the form of drops in their water or fresh vegetables. They will need to have their claws clipped at regular intervals and as they are susceptible to lice you should keep a check on them. They should be bathed occasionally and never put back in their cage until they are completely dry- use a hairdryer on a low setting. Make sure you play with them and only put them out on the grass when it is dry it is very dangerous for them to get wet tummies. Equally always provide some shade in the run as the get sunstroke very quickly.

There is some brilliant information on www.guineapigcages.com on housing and bedding, etc, and a great forum full of info as well.

Medical information can be found at www.guinealynx.com with a care guide and a forum also.

Also, please DON"T add any type of viatmins to the water. Vitamin C in particular degrades rapidly and particuarly with a stainless steel tip on the water bottles, it renders the vitamins as useless. Also piggies are creatures of habit and dislike changes, so they may drink less as the taste will be different, this can lead to other medical problems.

A balanced diet, (you can find great food charts on both the sites I mentioned) will provide all nutrients essential for wellbeing.

A cavy savy vet found in advance is a great idea, try and locate rescues in your area and save a life!
