Ragdoll cats: What is your personal experience with this breed?

I'm thinking about adopting a full-breed ragdoll kitten, but I'm not rushing into my decision before getting all of the facts. I've done some reading on this breed and I have a book about different breeds. However, learning about other people's personal experiences with ragdolls would be very helpful to me.

Tell me anything you want to about your personal experience with ragdoll cats. Have you found this breed to be very gentle, personable, intelligent, docile, etc? Are there any negative attributes that you've experienced with a ragdoll? Are there any known genetic disorders or predispositions to certain illnesses that I should keep in mind?

Do you have any advice to give me regarding adopting a ragdoll?

Thanks a bunch for sharing your experiences.

My last cat lived to be 17 years old...she was a long-haired cat and very sweet. It's been a little over 2 years since she died. I wanted to make sure the time was right for me to bring a new cat into my life. Any cat that I'd adopt would get the best life...I love cats.

Hey there!

Firstly, these are beautiful cats indeed.

I adopted my 2 y.o. Raggie boy about 5 months ago and have not regretted it once. I never thought I could love a cat as much as I do - and yes, as a rule they are very affectionate. He loves cuddles and the rougher you scratch him, the better he likes it.

They are very fluffy cats and do shed quite a bit, so a good brushing/combing every other day is necessary. And a few sticky roller brushes for your clothes will be needed as well! Goodbye black clothes!

But from my personal experience (and I'm in an electric wheelchair), they are divine. Mine did take a while to get used to my chair's noise and movement, and he does just suddenly flop in front of me - causing many a phone call to go unanswered! - and just look up adoringly. Beautiful natures.

Not all Raggies are lap cats, though. Bo adores petting and cuddles, etc., but he's not a lap cat per se. On his terms and in his own time, perhaps!

Yes, they are gentle, affectionate and docile cats so I would highly recommend them as a breed. I was never a cat person before I got Bo, but now couldn't bear to be without him.

Advice? Get ready for lots of fur on EVERYTHING, lots of cuddles and lots of laughter. They are a delight. Oh and check out the breeder to make sure you get the right personality for you. Ask them lots of questions, do all the usual preparatory stuff (ie. buying steel/ceramic bowls for food an water, scratching posts, large litter box, etc.) before you take ownership and enjoy!

Good luck! Feel free to email me privately if you want.

beautiful inside and out, they are very loving, loyal cats. you should go for it but on the other hand if your not 100% sure then dont do it-remember a pet is for life and it depends and relies on us to keep it safe, warm, fed, look after and loved ect, most cats are very independent but they still need love and security and befor we get them we must make sure we can provide that for them,so im glad you are not rushing into anything. if you can offer all this then please give a cat a home. good luck

they are the LOVERS. lots of fur, needs to be brushed often.
