How do I help my unfriendly Ragdoll?

I have two 4 month old kittens - a ragdoll boy and an exotic girl. I had my ragdoll for a month before I got the exotic (he was just under 8 weeks), but he was always quite boisterous and scratchy, and never much of one for being stroked. Since I got my exotic (who is very placid and affectionate), if anything he has become a bit less friendly - he won't come to me to be stroked, walks away if I try to stroke him, and won't play much when the other cat is in the room. Sometimes he bites and scratches. I've tried hard to pay both cats equal attention, and they seem to get on well enough with eachother, but my ragdoll just doesn't seem interested in interacting with me. He often just looks bad-tempered, with his ears back. I've started scheduling one-to-one play sessions with the raggy, and he seems to be a bit more responsive during these times. What else can I do to build a stronger bond with him?

It sounds like you're doing all the right things. Cats are just so territorial - and you may just have a cat that enjoys a one-cat home. But he'll just have to deal with it, and he will. It just takes time. Ironically, I have a ragdoll mix and she'd love to be an only-cat - she's also very independent and is not one for getting picked up by me, playing in front of the other cats, or just plain being around the other cats. As they get older they will establish their boundaries, but they may never just 'get along'. They will tolerate each other but may not be bosom buddies. That may also change when they get older but I wouldn't count on it. Just keep doing what you're doing - the kinks will work themselves out.

Interesting poser bud, although i don't have any 'cats' -got a yorkie- seems to me 'ragdoll' feels as though HIS territory has been 'encroached' upon, if ya ask me you're paying too much attention to 'exotic'....just leave em' in separate rooms for a while & introduce em' gradually, then see what happens!...

it could be that he is territorial or it could be that he is a bit jellos that you got another cat a month after you had him and he likes the girl better than you so he just wants to be away form you. the best thing to do is to just keep on what your doing and soon he will be fine

That might be his personality. Some cats are not socialized well and some that is just the way they are.
When my last batch of Manx was born I wanted to keep the orange female rumpy. I played with her the most. She never was very friendly so I kept her sister who is a tortoiseshell riser. I never played with her much but she is the friendliest cat. I gave the orange kitten to a family with a girl that is about 10 or 11. That cat lets the girl carry her all over. Go figure.
Keep having one-to-one time with him. I would not suggest any rough play and if he is not in the mood don't force him.

Hes probably feeling a bit pushed out. the best thing is to accept him for what he is,some cats are loners.and others social. don't expect them to both be the same. I'm presuming they are being kept as house cats,.this alone breeds neurotic cats they are confined to a home for all their lives. In other words. serving a sentence and committed no crime, they are imprisoned for 15/20 yrs poor things. If let out they become much more social as they rely on you for food and warmth.
