Mastiff type breed owners? |
What is the best type mastiff breed? I love mastiff dogs and I want to know more about the breeds. I have heard of neopolitan... and French mastiff dogs... which is the best first and foremost, there is a difference in each and every breed. all are protective, but some are more so than others. there's not a "best" one, just what's best for you. i have english mastiffs, and they are generally fawn or apricot with black masks. they can also be brindle. they are the largest of the mastiffs, with males ranging 180 to 200 lbs, and females being 150 to 180. bullmastiffs are their own distinct breed, but differ from the english in size and their body type and facial features are a bit different. other than that, pretty much the same dog. neapolitan mastiffs are a beautiful bluish grey color, and are generally more wrinkly, and range from 120 to 180, depending on sex. they also have a docked tail, generally about half of it taken off. cane corso's or italian mastiff, come in a variety of colors, black, brown, brindle, and are around 120 to 150 depending on sex. they are best known for their use as protection animals, and often times have their ears cropped. it's not necessary, it's just something that is usually done. the one thing most important about a cane is that they are the most protective and dominating of the mastiff breeds. they MUST have a strong, educated owner, or problems will abound with them. they WILL control you if you allow them to. they take much more work than the other breeds. also, there is the tibetan mastiff, which are black and tan (like a rottweiler), and have a longer coat. they tend to be more reserved, although excellent pets with the right owner. the only suggestion i can give that is a MUST with any of the mastiff breeds is learn basic dog psychology, and how to teach your dog that YOU are the alpha dog in your household. i know of a great website on cane corsos that offers a lot of this information that really any dog owner should know. and lastly, once you decide which breed you want, make sure that the parents have their OFA certs, and their PennHip done. this is to ensure that you're less likely to get a puppy that will develop hip dysplaysia, or require eye surgeries. Sorry but my favorite is English mastiffs the Lion of the dog world..... They all will tend to have similiar dispositions, it just depends on what exactly your looking for. If you don't like as much of the floppy face, look into Bull Mastiffs. They are a little smaller 100 - 120 lbs... as opposed to 200 lbs for the regular Mastiff. Great Danes are my absolute favorite, but I also love the Old English Mastiffs. They are huge lovable dogs. Look at akc.org for more breed info. They even have links to breed clubs with pictures and more descriptions. Personally I love bull mastiffs, though I do also adore the Dogue De Bordeuxs. all mastiff breeds belong to the molosser ancestory..look that up and it will have all the mastiff breeds........i have an american bulldog,,i love tremendously..but another great dog is the cane corso,,,,bullmastiffs are fanstastic as well...i wouldnt venture from those breeds I loved my Bull Mastiff. He was the perfect dog for a woman. He was extremely loving, but his size was enough to make others think twice about coming to close or even getting out of their cars. He was a big baby and I would own another one if I could find one in my area. |
