Mastiff question?

We are thinking about getting an American mastiff. How much does it cost to get a mastiff neutered? What is the cost for shots like rabies, distemper and other common shots for a dog of that size? How much a month does it cost to feed a mastiff? Are females or male American mastiffs better with children or are they about the same? How easy is it to house train an American Mastiff compaired to other dogs?

Well, this is a larger breed of dog, so the neutering cost could probably be around $300. Most vets would recommend that you wait a little longer to get the larger breeds neutered because of their growth (10 months old?) If it is a puppy, they are pretty expensive in the beginning because they have to go back to the vet about every 3-4 weeks to booster their vaccines (Normally puppy shots are finished by the time they are 16 wees old-that's when they get the rabies vaccine) It's gonna cost you more for heartworm preventative because it's a bigger dog. Mastiffs are great family dogs!!!!! They are very docile, and are great with kids. The only problem is, that they don't normally live that long.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PUPPY. HAVE FUN

I am SO glad your nuetering..well done you. It's nice to know there are at least a handful of sensible dog owners out there. To nueter it is about 150 dollars at a vet but you can get the operation done cheaper at a animal shelter. The cost of feed...it depends. I would reccomend you get food formulated for large breeds. Remmember avoid all foods that contain wheat, soy, and corn. The cost for food I would sestimate to be about maybe $50 per month. Both male and female dogs are the same when it comes to kids.
Houstraining will be the same as other dogs.

There is no difference in the cost of vaccinations - one vaccine fits all breeds and sizes. The cost of the neutering will vary due to size as well as from one hospital to another, especially from one part of the country to another. Your vet is the best place to have the surgery performed, but you can find low cost clinics and shelters that will do the surgery for less. But check with them and let them know how large your dog is as many have size limits.

Food costs will also vary, depending upon what brand you feed. It is recommended that you feed a diet specifically formulated for large breeds, but you don't need the high cost premium brands if cost is an issue. But do stay away from the cheap "generic" brands. I personally feed the Purina foods, which are very good and are affordable.

There is no difference as to which sex will be better with children. There should also be no difference in house training when compared to other dogs. But do remember that the larger breed dogs take longer to mature, mentally and physically, so your Mastiff will still be a puppy at 1 1/2 years old while a smaller breed dog will be an adult much younger.
