Maltese & Yorkie ?

Hi,
I have a Maltese (male) a yr and a half now, and I just bought a Yorkie (female) that is 14 weeks old over the weekend. My main purpose for that is to keep my maltese company. Well, on the first day, they run around and play together. However, after the first day till now, my maltese seems lose interests on the yorkie. He won't play w/ her, sometimes she even goes to him, or bit him for his attentions. Are they not getting along fine?
Is my maltese hate his new friend? sometimes i can tell my maltese is getting jealous when I holding the yorkie.
I don't know what to do now, is the yorkie way too aggressive for maltese? she never stops.
Pls help if you have a similar situation. Thanks.

Your Maltese is probably jelouse for sure . Your have to give more attention to him now then before but be sure you don't act like he is getting his way. Hold and pet both of them at the same time also. They will eventually get along again. Your Yorkie may have told your Maltese that she is the alpha in the house and your Maltese may just have to deal with it. Good Luck

That's not agression. The yorkie is a puppy and has just been seperated from the constant attention of all her littermates! Of course she wants to play all the time. Maltese is a little older, and gets tired easier. Crate train both, so they have a place to "chill out" without bothering each other. I don't like being stuck in the presence of another person 100% of the time, and the same goes for the maltese.

The Maltese might be just getting used to his friend. He might be jealous because you may pay more attention to your new pup. You might think that your giving them the same attention but the Maltese may see it differently. Why don't you try putting them in a cage together and see what happens. Keep them close together and maybe they will learn that they're are here to stay and that they have to live together. Try playing the same game with both of them like fetch. If they both get involved maybe they'll start playing together. It's worth a try. Treat them the same way and they might just become friends. They need to get used to each other.

pets DO get jealous sometimes. i jhave been in a kinda similar situation, when i was born, my mom had already had this rat terrier, named scout, who was originally used as my dad's hunting dog. when i came into the picture, my mom started of course paying attention to me, and scout seemed to have to beg for her attention, and she even bit me once, as i was "the newcomer". on our home movies of me as a baby, scout looks at me confoundly, and wonders why im allowed to touch her toys, and my mom is spending to much time with me. we wound up giving scout away to a friend, bcuz she got even meaner when my brother was born, about a year later, and we could tell it wouldn't work out.
my advice is do what seems right, and give them a few more days, and if there is a SERIOUS conflict, or maybe even fighting, then give one away. that may be very hard to do, trust me i know, i've had to give away a cat, and a ferret before, and it was painfully hard. but you never know, they may grow on each other. just give their friendship some more time, before making any rash decisions, and play with them at the same time.

It takes time and patience to get two dogs to get along. I have a yorkie and a yorkiepoo. At first, I didn't think my 5 year old yorkiepoo will get along with his new sister who is 4 months old. After playing with them constantly for 2 1/2 months, he's beginning to accept her. Don't get me wrong, he still snaps at her every now and then but I think it's the puppy in her that sets him off. She nibbles everything she can reach including his legs. My yorkiepoo is very territorial. I never thought I would see him with another dog in our house.

Just give them some time

I have a similar, yet opposite situation. I have a Lhasa Apso (14 yrs., female, TRUB), and a King Charles Spaniel (2 yrs., male, CHARLIE). Trub used to have a younger male companion, and was devistated when he died. We tried to find her a new companion, but she wouldn't accept any of them. I read that an older dog will best accept a puppy or younger dog. When we acquired Charlie, they really clicked, but Trub gets easily irritated at his youthful exuberance. He nips at her ears, gently, and she actually tolerates it. But I can see jealousy going on. Trub used to be quite a lap dog, which I appreciate, but in her age she's unable to do it. Charlie is a Huge lap dog and wants to be in my lap all the time. I can see the jealousy in her waning eyes. But Charlie was abused, and I cannot deny him the attention.

I have read much about the multi-dog relationships, and the primary dog must be given the first of everything. Feed your Maltese first, pet him first, give him treats first, etc. I do that with my two, but there's still a problem. Charlie is afraid to eat unless Trub has eaten first. Sometimes she just doesn't feel like eating, so he'll go hungry until she eats. This doesn't seem to be your problem. Yours are very close in age, Even so, they seem to have that "pecking order". Be sure your Maltese gets first rights on everything. He wants to rule the roost, and wants to know that he comes first. Yes, I think he's getting jealous, so give him plenty of attention. Of course, you don't want to neglect the Yorkie, but I think she will understand taking the "back seat".
