Maltese vs. yorkie?

I am just researching the differences between maltese and yorkie. Can kindly the yorkie owners and maltese owners tell the differences between the 2 breeds? What are the major differences, difficulties and advantages in the two breeds. It would be so much better if a owner of a yorkie and maltese let us know as she/he has better knowledge. Which is your favourite breed and why? What is the temperament difference between these 2 dogs? Please no rude answers.

I have a male Maltese and he's a very sweet dog. My grandmother had a yorkie when I was little and he was very sweet as well but more hyper than my Maltese. I personally prefer the Maltese. As far as temperment goes, both dogs are toy dogs and can be yappy. But it really depends on your dog. I suggest that you find a good breeder and see that the pup's parents have good personalities that you like, because all dogs are different even if they are the same breed.

As far as training goes, some say that toy breeds can be hard to train overall, but have no problems with my malt. He's the smartest dog ever! M锝?grandma's dog had problems with potty training, however, this is hard to avoid. I just got lucky! Look for a breeder that already started paper training. This will make it easier for you. Also, both breeds are not so suitable for children, especially the yorkie, since they are smaller and can be very fragile. The maltese are a little larger in general, so if that's what you are looking for, that's good. With that said, both breeds have a variety of sizes, so it depends. Oh and I think I spoil my malt a little too much so he can be a little jealous at times... but I enjoy that! lol... He's also a bit of a picky eater.

Overall, my experience tells me that both breeds are similar. It's really a matter of what you like. Looking for a reputable breeder and finding the puppy with the right personality is really the most important! Good luck!

Email me if you would like more information about Maltese, as that's the breed that I am more familiar with.
Here is also a good community with excellent information on the maltese: http://www.spoiledmaltese.com/forum

I am not an owner of the breed however I have worked with animals for over 2 years and my experience is that Yorkies and Maltese are Very sweet dogs I am not toooo familiar with maltese but I have been around some yorkies and yorkies can be very hyper....they are one of those breeds that dont know that they are little haha. they will take on a bigger dog any day.

Its nice to see someone actually asking a decent question, and doing some research.

I would go to

www.breederweb.com

they present to you the attributes of the breed in a barchart that is very easy to read and compare.

I have always owned big dogs. I needed a small, non shedding dog so, I started researching as you are.
I have two Maltese. I can't explain them to you. Everyone is so tired of hearing about my dogs. First, I found a very small breeder. My two boys have the same parents, but come from different litters. They are 7 months apart in age. How many people can say that? I loved the first one so much, I had to go get another one. And NO breeding even thought of, they are BOTH males and both neutered...........
They have fur that is not fur. It starts out curly at birth and VERY soft. At about 1 year old it is like a heavy silk feel to it. They never smell like a dog. I have them groomed every 5 weeks and keep them in a long puppy cut. I don't want the maintenance of the fur going down to the floor length.

They love everyone they meet. BUT want to be super watch dogs too. They have NEVER chewed on anything. I didn't train them not to chew, they just never have.......They have their toys and that is it. They want to be loved every minute of the day. They are affectionate and they express their feelings much like a human would. You are aware of when they are hurt, depressed, happy. They actually smile.

They look at you like they do understand every word you say. I know everyone says these things about their dogs, but Maltese really do. I have never been around a more intelligent dog and I am 60 years old. I had dogs and more dogs when my kids were growing up. We had mutts and we had pure breds. NONE of them were as smart as these two dogs.

They are entertaining to watch them together. They "talk" in a language they don't use on humans. It reminds me of the language that twin human kids use. But it is a funny growl, bark, whine mixture. They only use it on each other.

I have mine potty trained to the pee pee pads. Which is a good thing..The breeder had them trained when I got them. BUT my youngest one is too small to climb stairs, which is what he would have to do to go outside to potty. I live in Michigan. The snow outside would bury both of them. The older one weighs 9 pounds which is at the top of the chart for a Maltese. The younger one weighs about 6 pounds and he will not get any bigger. He is very small boned like their father. And the older one is a carbon copy of the mom..........
I would not take any amount of money for these two guys. They bring me so much joy because they are like little humans. They just crawl into your heart and don't leave.........

Hi, I don't know much about maltese but we just got a yorkie this past Sun. After seeing a neighboors sweet yorkie we bought his cousin! Our yorkie is so sweet and was bred to be a non-yapper.I know , I was skeptical at first but the breeders dogs don't bark so the puppies never did. I.just told my vet he is too quiet and doesn't give any verbal signal when he wants to go outside. I have 3 young children and this puppy has no problem being handled. I wouldn't call him hyper at all. Then again my kids tire him out. We chose a Yorkie for allergy related reasons. we are going to keep him in a puppy-cut and let his ears do as they may. As far as the maltese and bichon etc. I think Maltese is white? They looked a little too foo foo for my taste. And my husband and son! We also got a yorkie that will be on the large side as far as breed standard.
I think it really must depend on breeder and how the dog has been handled as a puppy.

what about a maltese and yorki cross ?
