3 month old keeshond puppy... howling when I leave her in a crate? |
I bought a 3 month old keeshond last week. She is playmate for my pomeranian. They get along great and sleep in a crate together... but the Keeshond still howls and barks (like crazy) when I leave for the day or them in the crate at night..... I don't understand... she is not alone.... any suggestions? Each dog should be crated seperately. Two dogs should never share the same crate. well she probely dosen't like to be alone tou should gragely get her used to the crate This happened for a few days w/ our pup. He eventually got used to being in the crate and the crying stopped. She needs to get used to both the crate and your other dog. Don't go to her when she cries because then she'll learn that howling = attention, and she'll continue to do it. Otherwise, just wait it out. She'll stop. If you leave music or an clock ticking or something that will calm them, it will make them stop howling and rest! It works pretty well! Get two crates, one for each dog. They need to have their own separate space. As for the howling you need to ignore it, if you go to her every time she howls or makes a noise she will learn to do it more for attention. Try giving the dog some treats for going in her crate. I do this with my dogs, I give them the command "kennel" and when they go in I give them a few treats to associate the crate with a positive experience. Also make sure you aren't leaving her in there too long. A puppy can't hold their bladder as long as an adult dog only maybe 4 hours. She will howl and bark if she has to go potty because dogs HATE to go potty where they sleep and especially if they know they will end up sitting in a crate full of pee. Hope this helps!! When we first got our Border Collie pup she HATED the crate. She would cry and howl like crazy. We gave her lots of different toys to have in there to keep her busy and sometimes left her in the crate when we were in the room with her watching TV or something so she wasn't alone. We were also very careful to ignore her whenever she would howl or cry and eventually (and sometimes it would seriously take about an hour) she would stop. Now, she loves her crate. She takes her toys in there and chews on them, and goes into it for naps. PS, we also had a lab puppy that was 2 months older than her and we crated them together. |

No mini Keeshond breed...not unless they have developed another designer mutt. ...What's the problem? I've had Kees' for over 20yrs. & none of them were very loud. They are trained to be barge guard dogs, but rarely bark for no reason. These dogs are very calm... If he is only nine weeks old training isn't going to happen for a couple of months. You don't housetrain a nine week old puppy. You just get used to taking him out at times he is likely... take her to the vet. My neighbors Keeshound lived for I believe 18 years. just make sure she has a place to cool off. All that fur is good for insulation and keeping cool, just make sure she doe... |
