Where would I adopt a Keeshond in Hawaii?

Hi! I live in Hawaii, and own a dog-friendly townhouse. I would love to get a dog--I've narrowed my choice down to a Papillon or a Keeshond, but I am leaning more towards the Keeshond. Only thing is, I don't know where to get one...it wouldn't have to be a puppy; an adult dog is fine.

I don't want to support puppy mills, so I probably wouldn't purchase one from a petstore. I can't seem to find any breeders in this state, and there are no keeshond rescue groups for Hawaii that I'm aware of. Our humane society has mostly pitbulls and dobie mixes.

Please help. Also, how much can I expect to pay for a pet-quality keeshond? If you think of anything else about the breed that might interest me, please share.

OK...thanks for your answers. Here are some additional details:
1) I live in HAWAII; there aren't many shelters here;
2) I've been to the Humane Society on the island and I haven't really found a dog that's right for my family and I;
3) I need a dog that can be gentle with my children and my in-laws;
4) We really have narrowed the dogs we want to either be a Papillon or Keeshond
5) SO...if you have information on how I can find out more about these dogs' availability in Hawaii, THEN please feel free to comment...

Have you tried searching newspapers or the web? If you can't find one, maybe you can look elsewhere and have the dog shipped to you, even though I don't reccomend it.

Just look through the pound if you cant find anything and adopt a more needy animal perhaps.

hey Don't Discount the pit bulls, as long as they weren't fighting dogs that were confiscated they are GREAT. Pits are a great dog with a bad rep. And the sad thing is the bad rep is usually a Pit that has been fed gunpowder and had his stomach tore up to the point he is mean cause he is in constant pain. Pits are one of the most loving dogs i have ever seen and they will protect there home and owner far more than a Keeshond. i would give the Pit a try!

You can get a rescue dog for less than $1000.

Most rescue puppies are around 130 to cover the cost of vaccination

Adult rescue dogs are around 200

Elderly dogs are even cheaper
