My 10yr old Keeshond had his first seizure last night. Is it Epilepsy or Brain Tumuor or something else? |
My dog was rushed to the emergency vet last night after I found him outside crying and wandering around in a daze. He was unresponsive, was drooling a little, and was heavily panting. He finally laid down and had a glazed look over his eyes. After calling an after hours vet I went back outside to find him recovered but extremely scared and stressed. After leaving the vet, I found out this morning he had another seizure about midnight which lasted about 30sec. He recovered after an hour and was told he was okay this morning. I have noticed over the last couple of months that on occasion he has acted 'strange' and as my husband says is a bit 'skitzie'. I have also noticed he has trouble with his sight sometimes. Blood tests have come back normal except with a slight elevation in something relating to his liver, but still within normal limits. All physical signs are healthy. Could this be a brain tumor, epliepsy or something else causing these symptoms? I am sorry you and your boy are going through this. If tests were run, and came back within normal ranges, you are probably looking at idiopathic epilepsy, which is just a fancy was of saying seizures of unknown origin. If you haven't already, start keeping a notebook with the date, time, and description of every seizure. This will help you and your vet check out any potential causes, triggers, etc. and help you to be able to help stop the seizures. Having an MRI might be an option, to rule out tumors if that is what you are concerned about, but expect a hefty price to go with that. Why didn't the emergency vet give you an answer? He ran tests, and all seem normal. Unless he's a novice, I would think he would at least offer a "most reasonable explanation". Then, refer you to your regular vet. Sometimes a pet may only have 1 seizure and never suffer from another one again. My brother's Rottweiler just had a few seizures and it was discovered that she has low blood sugar and is being treated with steroids. Other dogs have seizure disorder and need to be given Phenobarbitol daily. It all depends on the frequency, duration and severity of the seizures. |
