I have a keeshond, She is 10yrs old, Should I get her a buddy?

We live in an apartment. I walk her about 2-3 hours total in a day. Since my husband now has a day job she will be alone during the day. I know keeshonds get lonely and sad without companionship so should I get her a friend like another dog or a cat? How will she react? She gets along well with dogs at the dog park.

It totally depends on your dog. My beardie was 10 when I got my first 2 greyhounds. He was ecstatic!! I swear he turned into a puppy again running around with them, following them everywhere they went. Mind you, he was very laid back and dog friendly and I didn't bring in a puppy. Most dogs that age wouldn't tolerate young puppies well, but how about an adult if you want a companion for her. It's also pretty difficult to housetrain a puppy in an apartment and with no one home.

Just don't make the mistake of getting a dog for your dog - you're the one who has to look after a new dog so you need to want one just as much as you wanted your keeshond.

You know... if she has been an only dog for that whole 10 yrs. I'd say no. Older dogs don't like change, and it can cause more problems than it solves.

If you do decide you absolutely have to get her a buddy. Work with a rescue and try to find one closer in age to your dog, and see if they will allow you to take her to meet the other dogs first. Try for a boy dog, opposite sex usually works better than same sex. If your dog doesn't get along with the other dog- then it is a lost cause once you get home. If they don't get along after you get home, then you might still have a long uphill battle.
