How do you keep people away from your dog when on a walk?

People always want to run up and pet my dog when we are on a walk. I tell them to please STAY AWAY he does not like other people but the response I get is usually something like 'all dogs love me!' then they try and touch him which he hates. He is not a mean dog and I know he would not bite somebody but it is still annoying. When I get angry at people and take my dog away they act like I am the most evil person ever. It is annoying.

Why does everyone HAVE to touch my dog?

And my dog is an Ibizan hound. Ibizans are a naturally reserved breed and only like the people in their family. It does not mean they were not socialized well as puppies.

k9: I am very polite to people at first. It is only after they disrespect me and my dog that I get angry and walk away. I am an introverted person. It's a personality trait, get over it. Same with Ibizan hounds. They are reserved.

And yes, people are ******* because my dog is not PUBLIC PROPERTY for anyone to grab. Are you the kind of person who just pets anyone's dog with out asking? I hope not.

You could lie and tell people that your dog is a service dog in training and cannot be touched. I know that is very dishonest but that is a good excuse for people to just look and not touch. You could even make a vest to put on him that says "Service dog in training".

when I want to walk my dog, and not draw attention, I take him somewhere that isnt alot of people.. a queit neighborhood.. or a park that isnt used often.

edited to add:
please do not get a "service dog in training" vest. That is misrepresentation of real service dogs.

If you want to do something similar, get a vest that says "please do not touch" if you want to lie, get a vest that says "I bite"

Frimly tell them "he doesnt like people, no people" and walk away. My pit will jump on anyone who comes near him, he gets a little excited when there is new people, and people get so mad if he gets them muddy, i just tell them 'i told you hed jump on you.." and walk away.

I know! I'm with you! That is so obnoxious. I'm putting this on my watch list to see if anyone has an answer.

Ok, rant time:

When you have a chihuahua (he's the same way, he doesn't care to be bombarded with strangers)... it's especially annoying when you are trying to walk through a busy town...

You will not even fathom how many people ask "CAN I PET YOUR PUPPY?!?!?" (One, he's five and not a puppy anymore... Two, I'm walking, and Three...NO)

What is wrong with these obnoxious people? When you are walking your dog around why would someone want to 'touch' your dog? ugh! My dog is timid with strangers so they end up looking like you've abused your dog just because it doesn't like getting pet by some rowdy kids. yuck, it's like those idiots who try to pet a seeing eye dog while it's working.

Someone let me know besides saying something really rude over and over again. Maybe a "DON'T TOUCH ME" sign around the dog? Who knows. People sometimes irritate me so much. They can't keep their hands off something either unique or small.

Unless you have eyes in the back of your head, you can't really avoid those weird people who love to rush you. I find it best to get the dogs used to weirdos that try to rush us.. IT's gonna happen so it's better that they are used to it and expecting it, than to figure you can keep them away and then have an incident.

I have a dog with a lot of fear agression (unfortunately she suffered some neglect as a puppy) so she tends to growl and snap at strangers although she's never actually bitten anyone-it's more just to fend them off. I have to very vigilant when I am walking her and as I see people approaching I make sure that she heels and stays with me and I get a good grip on her leash. Then, as recommended to me by a trainer, I make the first contact with the person by saying hi before they get close enough to pet her and then telling them right away that my dog is not comfortable with strangers. People usually just say, "Oh, okay" and walk by. I also had another trainer who would just flat out tell people, "My dogs don't like to be pet" and people would automatically just walk by.

I think it's all in your delivery. If you make it sound as though there may be some threat to them and you are doing them the courtesy of sparing them that then they will keep to themselves.

< It goes from one end of the leash to the other. >

Anyway, why don't you just try looking at this 'annoyance' from a different perspective?

Most people like dogs. Most people like to say hello to and pet dogs. < what *******, huh? >

Okay, so you say your dog hates being touched. You could be projecting that onto him, but anyway, how about just saying - in a sweet voice and with a smile - "I'm sorry - he's not friendly" and keep moving. If they say "All dogs love me", just keep moving and say "Sorry. Maybe next time." And.....keep moving. And smiling.

If you really are saying "STAY AWAY" then you are causing stress to yourself and your dog. Plus you're coming off as a high-strung beyotch.

The "people" aren't the problem.
You need to handle this better.

*Interesting trait you wrote about your dog and it's breed. Could the same be said about you?*

I was in PET SMART today and saw this shepard with a vest type harness on and in big bright orange letters it said PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PET.....I have no idea where you would get one...sorry.

Easy - I have a staffordshire bull terrier!! When I walk her with the gentle leader harness (goes around nose to prevent pulling) people think it is a muzzle.

The fact that she tries to greet and chat with everyone we walk past only keeps them further away.

Bl**dy idiots!!

You Know,I have this same problem and nothing makes me madder.
If your dog bites someone for only trying to pet it you are responsible and your dog is deemed viscious when it's only trying to protect itself from some fool who thinks it's alright to force themselves on your dog.
I've given up on being nice and I tell people "I don't grab your kid out of the cart at Kroger and pet it so who are you to do it to my dog?"
Your dog is a dog and as such you can NEVER trust him not to bite whenever he feels threatened so try to stop people from touching him before they do.Explain to them that your breed is pretty much a one person dog and that their seemingly innocent attempt at affection is looked upon by your dog as a show of dominance and he'll not tolerate being dominated by a stranger. If they get bit it's their own fault. Not all dogs love everyone. And do not be afraid to tell them this in a forceful manner. Your dog is your property. It's up to you to protect him from situations where he's uncomfortable or afraid.
People's unwanted attention has made one of my german shepherds aggressive. He's not a bit shy about snapping at people who force themselves on him and they get mad at me for bringing a viscious dog in public.I then have got to point out that my dog was acting like the perfect gentleman until they decided that he was out for the sole enjoyment of others.I carry no sign that states PETTING ZOO.
And since my dog did not ask specifically to be touched and he IS MY property just who do they think they are to disrespect me or my dog in such a manner? I don't run up to and sit in their car because I like it and want to see how it feels.
If the dog wants petted he'll let them know if not then they should keep their hands to themselves.
If people are kind enough to ask to pet my dog before they reach out a hand I tell them to ask him first by just standing still and not looking him in the eye they they can hold out a hand for him to smell but do it calmly don't reach out a hand in a manner that makes him think he's about to be grabbed or he'll snap.
Please be careful with your dog.People have actually put their whole arm inside my car windows that were down no more than 4 inches to pet my dogs.I guess they want to get bit.

We have an American Bulldog and a Pit bull. Neither is people aggressive. We don't allow people to pet our dogs because of the liability. If anything goes wrong we know who will be at fault regardless of the facts. I really don't care what others think. I just tell them that my dogs are not people friendly and to keep away. My other gripe is idiots who allow their dogs to run up to yours. They say my dog is friendly. I have to tell them clearly that mine aren't. We have resorted to looking for locations where we can take them and nobody else is around. We have found that the dogs are often smarter than people and our only solution is to keep the dogs away from others.
