Palomino. Breed or Color?? your opinion?

I personally have always considered palomino a color but ive come across countless books and websites that say its a breed, what do you think?

There is a palomino horse registry, BUT it is a color registry not a breed registry. This is NOT opinion it is scientific fact. A palomino crossed with a palomino will throw on average 25% cremello, 25% chestnut, and 50% palomino. This is because a palomino by definition is a chestnut horse with one dilution gene. If it has two it is a cremello. Thus there can never be a true breeding palomino.

Palomino is a color registry not a breed registry. It can not even properly be called a color breed since no breeding of registered to registered stock guarantees registry. In no way is palomino a breed. It is merely a color . You can make a sorrel or a black horse registry if you want. What would it require? Simply you keeping track of the horses registered therein and making certain the owners were truthful as to the color of their horses (provided you want to keep a good reputation for yourself). That is what the palomino registry is. A group of people keeping track of horses whose owners want on their list.

it's a color, too me at least. Here is why I think its a color. You can have a palomino quarter horse, paint, mule, draft breeds, and sooo many other breeds.

Ive always had trouble with this too , but i think it is properly a color , but there are some palimino breeds out there i think , i saw it in a text book once with a bunch of horse breeds in it . Hmmm . . .

Hope i helped,

i think its just a colour and they are very pretty horses

The only reason i believe it is a color is because
A) many breeds can be palomino
B) they have nothing distinct about eachother except for the fact of their color.

I mean - a quarter horse has distinct comformation etc. but a palomino really... isnt.

Color I have two palomino quarter horses, quarter is the breed palomino is the color.

I think a color, because any type of horse can technically be a palomino, but that doesn't make it another breed. A horse could be palomino colored, but be like, a morgan horse. So I say it's a color, because if it were a breed, it'd be specific to that breed. But seeing as it's not, it's a color.

Definately a color but they do have a registry for breeders who want just that palomino coloring called the Palomino Horse Breeders of America. there are certain restrictions to the registry and the horse must be a palomino to be in it.

I agree with what barrel racer says 100%.

A lot of books I have read say it's a color. I have always thought it was a color. A lot of my breed books say it's a color.

There is a palomino horse registry, but IMHO, it's just a color, and there are a LOT of different breeds that happen to carry the creme gene that causes it. Since any horse that happens to be redXredXcreme would be eligible for the "registry", regardless of it's parentage, I don't think it's much of a breed.

Palomino is obviously a color.
But palomino is also a registry. It is not a breed. A breed means that both the sire and dam must have a certain pedigree, and then meet certain standards within that pedigree. In some cases breeds have no standards except that both parents must be registered in their breed.
A registry is different. You can register horse of various breedings in a registry if they meet the standards. Example would be palomino. A palomino Arab would qualify if it was palomino in color and had its entry fee paid. A saddlebred would qualify, a Quarter horse would qualify, a Morgan would qualify as long as they were all palomino in color. There are benefits of belonging to a registry. For one thing, you can show under that registry and earn points which would be a permanent part of your horse's records. Also, to be double registered can be a benefit for people breeding - many people who own a palomino Quarter Horse will have them registered in both associations so buyers can show foals in both types of shows.
So your answer is correct. Palomino is a color. It is not a breed, but it is a registry.

both

While there is a Palomino breed registry, unlike paints, you cannot necessarily get a palomino out of one or both Palomino horses.

In order to be registered, a Palomino does have to pass color and confirmation inspection. This is what makes Palomino a 'color breed'

Similar to Pintos being a 'color breed' because there is a registry and inspection required - the horse has to have enough white on it in this registry, but no parentage proof.

This is where Pinto, Albino and Palomino differ from a breed such as Paint. A paint, while it is traditional for it to be colored, can be registered if it is solid, but only if the parents are properly registered and only as breeding stock. Where I live, paint and pinto are interchangeable when talking about such a spotted horse - in some places calling an unregistered spotted a horse a paint is a faux pas.

So, I do not define palomino as strictly a color or a breed, but a colored breed.

Both!!!!!

i have 2 registered Palimino mares and they are registered as Quarter Horses, and just common sense is that its Deffinetly a color!

In my personal opinion... A color. Palomino can also be a registered breed, so for some it's really a tough call. I consider palomino to be a color though simply because almost ANY breed can be a palomino color. I've seen palomino Quarters, drafts, walkers, paints w/ base color palomino, Grade horses, pasos, etc. Tons of breeds can be palomino, so making it a registerable BREED doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I feel the same about the color buckskin. Some say it's a breed...Or both, but I feel that a lot of breeds can be buckskin in color, so to me, it's a color.

I think it is a color because all breeds have palominos. The color comes from the the creme gene diluting the sorrel gene.

Palamino is a color but the reason it's concidered a breed is because the color is most commonly found in quarter horses and if a horse is palamino it usually has some quarter in em no matter how far back u have to go! Its kinda like the paints I think (they can be over 1/4 quarter horse I think)

Any knowledgeable horseman knows that the Palomino color can occur in any breed of horse EXCEPT the Arabian.

It is only a color, NOT a breed. Not everyone that writes a book or puts up a website is an expert. (maybe in their own minds...)

well i have a mustang and shes a cream palomino,so i guess its a colour. Her foal is mustang and shes a sorrel. hope it helps.

i think its just colour. Palominos are so cute
