Ok look..... I have a rescued horse arriving at my house in like a hour...... PLEASE HELP!?

My friend just bought a yearling from some kind of auction for $50!!!!! This horse is in REAL BAD SHAPE!!!!! She's keeping it at my house until they can make room for it. I have fresh sawdust down a stall ready. What else should I do for this poor animal?

keep light on hay,no grain, plenty of water, start with one flake of hay to see what it will eat and keeping a watch for signs of colic.slowly increase after three days but no grain.watch how much the yearling drinks to make sure it is hydrated.don't worm until a vet says it is OK,sometimes a yearling in bad shape will colic when wormed.keep watch on eye color of the whites and check the gums for blood replenishment and record these.but otherwise keep a good eye on the yearling and no snacks for at least a couple weeks.just hay and water.

make sure there is fresh food and water. put a small amount of food though, as you do not want the poor thing to overeat and get colic.

How old is it? How much does it weigh?
When I got my horse she was very underweight. I went to the feed store and got some supplements to put in her food and started noticing healthy weight gain within a week. Fresh water, appropriate grain, hay, that's all you can do for the moment. Most stores will be closing soon (depending on where you live) and I'm sure the vet won't be open until Monday.
Be prepared for the horse to be very skittish as well.

have water and hay ready for the poor little babe for sure, and call your vet to have him/her check the little thing out. and just see what he says and take off from there.

put him in a stall with some hay and alittle feed water but keep him away from other horses you dont no if he is sick.

Show him some love!!!! When he gets there let him get settled into the stall and then love on him. Show him you care as silly and tree huggerish as that sounds trust me he will appreciate a kind pat , face and word from you guys. If it's cold maybe make sure to have a blanket ready just in case. Maybe make him a little bran mash with some carrots or apples cut up in it. Groom him , massage his por tired lil body. Fresh water and hay. Be quite around him and like i said just love him.

take it to the vet!!!!!!!! Please do something to help it get better!!! Poor thing! YOu and your friend are good people taking in such a poor creature

Have water and grass hay ready for him. Don't give any grain, and if/when you do you'll have to start out with tiny amounts since it sounds like he's not used to it. It would also be helpful to have another horse in the barn, that he can see but not touch.

He will probably bounce back quickly. I once bought a yearling in bad shape at an auction. I passed him by on my first trip through because he looked like a VERY old, skinny pony. The second time through, I noticed all the baby teeth! Once I got him home and fed him, he was a different horse in short time.

Have hay and water for it. Don't let it eat to much it can colic and be in a worse condition. Give it some love but don't scare it and make it go into shock. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!! Also please get a vet out to check it out ASAP! Just to make sure it is doing ok.

First thing, take it to a vet. Observe what he/she says, take her/his advice. You can also go to it's stall or stable everyday and pet him softly, so he/she can feel safe in your hands. Try to give the horse more nutritious things to eat, every day go to his/her stall to check if she has gained weight.

Hope the horse gets better!

be sure to have fresh hay and water for this horse. not too much hay, and no grain, or else she will get sick. she's most likely starving, and too much food can kill her. also, make sure the water is a nice room temperature. she also might be sick, and cold water can make her even sicker. good luck, and take good care of her. : )

add a little corn oil to that babies feed and it will help him feel better and gain weight!! I recus colts and this is what my vet tells me to do..I would offer more hay than feed right away so it doesnt colic and if you can provide a blanket, that would be nice too.good for you and your friend!!!

A small amount of garlic in the feed, some locally milled food, wormer***, supplements, free supply of salt, possibly a blanket (depending on the cold), some TLC!... just keep everything as low stress as possible, auctions are very stressful, especially for sick horses.... yeah it is not too unusual for horses to go for 50 dollars at auction these days.... hope everything goes well and let the horse get plenty of rest! :-)
Also, of course like everyone else said don't feed too much, that is a given, but go ahead and get a bit of the less severe wormer in the baby, usually the weak ones are actually anemic from parasites, maybe some ivercare (won't be as tough on the horsies system)? Feed very sparingly for a while :-)

oh, and also, you may want to get your friend to go ahead and get a vet/farrier/dentist out there to take a look, if the horse is THAT bad, he/she probably needs a bit of a checkup! :-)

depending on how bad she is, a dry place, fresh hay and lots of water and get a vet asap. Thank you for helping.

omg that's so nice of you and your friend
give it a lot of water and a little bit of food

first off, since it came from a horse sale and is in real bad shape...keep it away from your horses. Strangles runs rampant at horse sales. Fresh water and hay is all you need now. I wouldn't put grain in front of it...and make sure your friend gets it vet checked asap. After your friend takes the horse to her place...scrub that stall! I have a pen that is way away from my horses to put auction horses in to keep them away from my horses for 6 weeks.

Edit: Others are giving great advice for things to do AFTER it has been checked by a vet...but you can kill with kindness by throwing too much of a good thing at it right way...seriously...just give it grass hay and water. Just that alone will be enough until the vet can look at it.

Some hay but just a little and often cause if you all of a sudden give a horse feed when he has been starved it can cause colic. I would get him a companion for him, if you have a mare who would mother him, that would be good in a large box, otherwise a friend in the next door box would be good and then I would get a vet to come check this guy over and make sure he is reasonably healthy.
If it's cold and he will let you then get a rug on him cause they lose a lot of weight through being cold and I would suggest having someone stay with him if possible.
When you can get to a feed store get some pre- and pro-biotic suppliments to help it through the stress and feed change.
Long term you need to build this guy up slowly, get him on a stud and youngstock feed and gradually build up the amounts, give him a week or so then get a dentist and farier to come and check him over. I would get advice from the vet about worming him as he may be too weak to withstand a normal worming and this is something only your vet can advise on.

Someone else mention quarentining him which is a good idea, but I woudl suggest give him a companion and quarantine both cause he will need some equine comany, or at the very least a goat or sheep as this will seriously reduce his stress levels and make him feel more secure.

Good on you and your friend for taking on this little guy. Tkae it slowly and get the vets in and he should pull round and may well turn into a very nice horse when he's older. Good luck
