What kind of Fish can I keep in a 5 gallon and how many?

The bottom has gravel and a good filtration system

thanks

so I can get a betta and ghost shrimp

I have no light above or heater

I use a room light which is pointing directly at the tank and I have a window nearby

should I get a light and a heater

white clouds would be a good choice for a un-heated tank. 5-6 would be a good number. Platties and guppies also would be a good choice as long as the water will not get below 65-68

not much. even the smaller shoaling fish such as neon tetras need space to shoal, 15 gallons minimum.

in a 5 gallon you could keep a single betta and a couple of small ghost or red cherry shrimp.

if you were an experienced fishkeeper i would say a dwarf puffer, but they need specialist care and a mature tank in order to thrive.

Nothing more than a betta or some ghost shrimp.

not much!!!!!!

i would get like 5 neons or just have a betta.
or like 2 female bettas.
or some kuhli loaches. people say they hide but mine were always active.
or like some dwarf puffers.

but 5 gallons really isnt enough room for that many fish...
id just get a betta..

a betta is a nice choice in it. they are pretty good and easy to pet in. but you can only add one male in it to avoid fighting.

you can't place any schooling fish in it, because they need a bigger place to play around and to avoid nipping with other fish..

just add more live plats in it...

2 or 3 small goldfish are good in my opinion. some people say that each goldfish needs at least 10 gallons because they produce high amonia, but in my experience, if you do 25% water change after siphoning out their poop once a week and have a good filter, your fish will get along fine. keep in mind tho that if they get too big, you might need to upgrade tank.
A male betta is also nice and they are beautiful. You can also add a female in there but they might mate and you might want to read a little about that before adding one. Betta's are cleaner than goldfish, but depending on the kind of filter you have, they might not be good for your tank. they prefer still water or a filter that is not too strong. but you'll also need to add a heater in. they tend to like temperatures around 74 F.

remember to have your new aquarium with the filter on working at least a week by itself, before adding any new fish in it. good luck!

Any fish in that tank is going to need a heater. You can get small ones fairly cheap that will work with a 5 gallon tank. A betta would be happy in there with heat or you could get 2 female and a male guppy or 2 platies.

A betta would be the best choice, since they really don't mind being on their own. Other fish are either too big or should be kept in schools so they need more room to swim.
