Is it okay to get guppies in a 5 gallon tank if so how many? |
for guppies do I need a seperate tank to put the babies in A breeding trio of one male and 2 females would be fine. Make sure you have lots of plants and hiding spots and just leave them alone. The fry will hide in the plants and stuff and maybe some will survive. You don't have to remove them unless you want to try to raise them all but that never happens even if you do separate them. 1 inch of fish for ever 1 gallon. So 4 or 5 guppies. You should remove the babies once they are born or they will be eaten. I'm not really sure about the answer to your question, but I had two goldfish in one medium size tank, and after a couple of weeks one of them died. The other one is still living today (at more than a year), so I think that the reason was that they were living in the same tank. that one inch per gallon rule doesnt work. its like saying you could put a 10 inch fish in a 10 gallon. you could put 3 in there. more than that would be to much. It probably is okay, but bigger is always better so you should consider getting at least 10 or 20 gallons... 1-4, four maximum. Guppies breed though, so be aware that a female almost always will breed. But if your not ready to have the baby fry, the others will eat them [sadly] so you dont have to keep them, although some pet stores will take them. And also, you will need another tank unless you dont want the babies. But if you do, get the other tank. You should also get a 10-20 gallon tank and use that one for your fish, and use the smaller 5 gallon one for the babies. That way you can get more guppies. I have been breeding show quality guppies for about 15 years.and use 10 gal tanks. I will have about 15 full size fish along with several juveniles in the tank. I separate the males from the females in order to keep the strains pure. as long as you have proper filtration and good water quality you can hold about5-7 full size fish and several juveniles |
