I am looking for infomation on the Field Spaniel from owners of one.?

I am looking to buy a Field Spaniel as a family pet and want to hear from owners of one what they are like personality wise. Are they good with little kids? Do they eat or bark a lot etc...? Do they tend to attach to one member of the family, as I have read they do this?

I'm very interested in Field Spaniels too :) I e-mailed some breeders once with questions and they were all happy to answer them. I'd highly suggest doing that... ask the questions you just asked. They certainly know their stuff, are helpful, and you may strike up a relationship with the breeder of your future dog :D

I've also gone to a dog show to watch the breed and met some of the dogs and their breeders/handlers there.

Activities
Field Spaniels are true sporting companions and are happy to join you in whatever activities you enjoy. Be it hunting, boating, walking, or watching TV, your Field Spaniel will be at your side. Most Field Spaniels can easily be trained to pass the AKC庐 Canine Good Citizen庐 (CGC) test. Field Spaniels also make good therapy dogs. Many Field Spaniel owners enjoy training and competing with their dogs in AKC events. Field Spaniels successfully compete in conformation, obedience, agility, hunt tests, and tracking tests. For more information about AKC events and purebred dogs, visit www.akc.org.

I own a Field Spaniel, and I wouldn't get the same breed again. Although his character is nice in itself, he has way too much energy for me (at least he used to, now he's practically on his death bed and still up to mischief). When he was a puppy, we couldn't toilet-train him for the longest time. He bit everything in sight to pieces, burried shoes and hair brushes and god knows what else in our backyard, always stomped all over the garden beds, defecated all over the yard (he is an outside dog) even though normally dogs choose a secific spot for that, he was always running aroung chasing cats, every time we took him for a walk he strained the leash till he almost choked on it, then strained it some more... we have tried training him for several years to walk close by, and it didn't work (by the way, every other spaniel of whatever type I ever saw on a leash behaved the same way, it seems to be a part of their nature).

I admit we were not very well informed on how to handle this breed, and how to use all the specific tricks needed to teach such a dynamic, hyperactive dog, who's not the smartest by the way (no that that is a specific trait of the whole breed to my knowledge). He could never stand cats and chased everything that moved, so if you have other animals, you might have to work very hard on teaching your spaniel to leave them alone.

What I'm saying is, they are fun, active, loving and lovable dogs, but you need to invest a lot of time in their training and work really hard with them in order to avoid some of the problems listed above. A professional opinion or training school might be the best thing, if you can afford it.

Yes, they are really good with little kids, who have the energy to keep up with them, and they are very gentle. They do eat a lot (at least ours did when he wasn't so old, he'd eat until he threw up, then eat some more, and he often helped himself to things that were on the table when we weren't looking). It's true that they attach themselves to one family member in particular, either the one who is giving them the most attention or the most food. They also take on the character of that person over the years, which can be very funny but also excrutiating. Oh and they are sooo very stubborn. And they bark a lot, loudly, at the moon, at the mailman, at everything which moves. Our dog is scared of lightning and he completely scraped the paint from the side of our front door and left deep etchings when he was trying to get inside (many many times).

Personally, I'm not in favor of the breed any longer. We got him because I wanted a spaniel (I was 10), because they look so cute and cuddly. Now, I'd go to a specialist who knows a wide variety of breeds and can recommend a breed that would suit my character, activity level and home environment.

So if the spaniel was your kids' idea, maybe you should think again. If however, you truly want the breed, then make sure you're well-prepared.
