Houdini is going to the dog pound if he keeps escaping!!!!!!!?

My spaniel/shephard keeps escaping out of the yard. He either digs under the chain link fence or breaks off the wooden fence and goes on the lamb for hours.

My dad is understanbly upset because he's my dog that I rescued off the highway 6 months ago (he's about 1 year old) and he keeps breaking his fence which he has to repair. So he wants to take it to the pound.

So what can I do to keep him from escaping???????? He has never done this for 6 months then just suddenly started doing it last week. The worse part is my other dogs follow him out so I am worried they'll be hit by a car or eaten by coyotes.

My yard is 10 acres big (that's 3 football fields side by side) so it'll cost a lot of money to escape proof the entire fence.

He's NOT neutered, so would doing this stop his behavior?????

Any other suggestions?????????????

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

I highly recommend that you tie up the dog on a chain. Give him a nice insulated doghouse, food, water and attention, and he'll be all right. My yard is way too big for a fence, too, and I have to keep my big dogs tied up. They don't have any of the behavior problems that the people who are against tying up dogs say. Tying the dog up is a lot better for the dog than to take him to the shelter where he may get put to sleep. Its better that he stays near the house than to let him keep escaping and leaving the yard. If hes not running around, than your other dogs won't be following him, and they'll stay home with him while hes tied up.
You'll be saving his life if you tie him up. :)

Get a dog run.

Goodness yes, if he's neutered he won't be killing himself to get out of your yard. Do that right away!

yea, if he was neutered he wouldn't want to find a ***** in heat...that would help, or get an invisible dog fence, they work good too...

Neutering him is a very good place to start, in fact, if he just started this recently, he may be following the scent of a female in heat.

Our dog we spread ground hot chile peppers around the fence and she stayed away from digging under it.

for the fence we put in an electric after a few zaps we unplugged it but she stay away from the fence

Additionally, yes you should neuter him. Too many dogs are in shelters and pounds right now. Neutering your dog will help this cause regardless of whether it helps keep him from escaping. You rescued him, so help save another from being put down because of the overpopulation of dogs.

Neutering sure did stop my dog from running.

I'm not a canine expert but i think you have to consider your dog's name...

Neutering can definitely help calm him, and you might consider obedience class (just to help you bond with him and get him under control). Also, is he an outdoor dog? If so, you might need to look into different containment (like deep fences he can't dig under). Also make sure he has adequate shelter, food, and water at all times. If he is an indoor dog, just don't leave him unattended outside.

I think you should get one of those collars where your dog gets a small electric shock whenever it goes outside your fence for all of your dogs, and if you can't do that, just escape proof your dog, it's your responsibility and you should take it seriously.

get a leash runner (they have heavy duty ones...either the stake in the ground or one that attaches to a tree or ur house)
or get an invisible fence

Could be a combination of things, and since he is Not neutered , he may be roaming more in an attempt to find a female in heat. Even dogs that are kept indoors can smell if a female is in heat and this causes dogs to go crazy, try to escape or get aggressive and agitated. So first thing, Neuter. Then you can build or buy a small dog run to keep your dogs fully enclosed while you are gone. Or can they be kept indoors ? He may also be doing this because he has separation anxiety and is searching for the owners when they leave or he is bored. He needs more exercise and not just a romp in your backyard.

He's doing this because he is NOT neutered. He smells a female in heat and he's going to do whatever it takes to get to her - as you can see.

That explains why he hasn't done this in 6 months. The female just went into heat and it's making him nuts.

Get him neutered.

First, get him fixed.

Second, help your dad with the fence. He is understandably mad. But if you took it upon yourself to fix the fence (or at least help, if you don't know how to fix it yourself) then he will not be so angry. Part of his anger is in your irresponsibility. Show him you are responsible enough to fix the fence AND responsible enough to own a dog.

I have a large mail dog that was doing the same thing getting him neutered help... but we ended up having to get him the invisible fence.

What you could do is make sure he gets lots of exercise while you are home, if he is tried, he may not escape so much. If a dog is bored, he will escape, that is for certain. Also, you could put him on a lead, from on tree to another so he has room to run, but can't dig out, but make should it is a safe location for him, it will also keep the other dogs safe.

Go to yo local hardware store and purchase the suppplies for a low to med. wattage electric fence system ( a clerck can help you find what you need) Be sure to take the measurements of your yard. run the electric fence along the BOTTOM of your fence so when he gets to close to the fence he hits it. It wont hurt him too bad just enough to keep him off the fence and from digging out. It is fairly inexpensive and very effective. We did it to our yard. Another thing is to go to the pet store (or walmart has them too sometimes) and purchase a perimeter collar. It is the same concept but if he gets to close to the barriers you put out his collar will shock him..It is a bit more expensive. Good luck.

You should try to get him neuterd mybe hes seeing a female doggie. You couls also get him linked up to a chain so he wont be running all over the place.

First of all All responsible pet owners should get there pets spayed or nuetered. Yes I believe neutureing the dog will help some in his trying to escape.

You say you have 10 acres, well why would you need to fence proof the entire 10 acres? If you can swing it finacially why not just use an acre (or less) of the property for the dogs to use and make that "there" escape proof fenced in area.

I have a stock aid fence all around my property. I had a shepard mix then got a golden, who loved to dig. I knew if he ever got out the other one would definetly follow him. So I layed down along the entire fence 4 foot by 2 foot wide quarter inch pressure treated boards. Drilled holes in each side then took 2 feet long metal rods (rebar rods) put nuts on the end of each rebar and proceeded to hammer the rebar into the ground. The bars on each end keeps the board in place. I did this to the entire yard. Each side has about 12 to 13 sections of fence.
You might think that I'm out of my mind for going through all of that. It was alot of work. HOWEVER, before when my dogs were in the back yard I couldn't relax at all knowing that they could dig under the fence and get out. I love my animals that much and had a few bucks and an idea and solved the problem. That's why I went to the extreme that I did. If the dogs dug under this they would have to tunnel under at least 2 feet first and then dig up........whats the odds. None. Never had a problem in 4 years and don't ever plan on having one.

Sooooo, the only other thing that I can come up with to possibly help you is this. You say you have all this property. Well it might be a little bit of an inconveniance for you but how about getting a dog run for the escape dog. Only problem with that is if you have other dogs too you really can't put them out with him at the same time, because the wire the dogs on could injure the others.

Well I don't know if I was any help to you or not. But try to get him nuetered as soon as possible.

Oh, and by the way. My golden was neutered before I got him too.....and he dug.

Get him nutered, keep him on a leash for 30-60 days after he is nutered. The reason why he is doing that is to search for female dogs in heat.
