How often can u safely wash your dog?

i have a springer spaniel and he loves romping through the fields when i take him walkies.
his coat smells a bit doggy now and again. which in turn makes the house smell a bit
how often can he safely be bathed

i would say a proper bath every 3 months due to the fact of you can dry out his fur
when he gets mucky use a piece of cloth and wipe him down
or take him to the groomers
have a chat with a professional groomer if you feel he needs more baths

once a fortnight should be fine you can buy deodorising tablets from the pet shop as well

You can wash it once a week but with unperfumed soap only.

Don't bath him more than once every couple of weeks. Use a mild shampoo, maybe one that has some oatmeal in it to help his skin. If you bath him too often, you will have a dog with skin issues.
Be careful not to get water in his ears!

Depending on his age, and what you use to bathe him. If you bathe him too much, his skin will dry out and you will have a dog that is constantly scratching, to the point of causing sores. Try a dry shampoo in between regular (once/mth) washings. And use a conditioning shampoo for dogs. Always make sure that you rinse very well.

only once a month so that their skin doesnt dry out.

If your dog gets muddy during a walk then just wipe him down with a warm damp towel. The vets don't recommend bathing them regularly because it's not good for their skin. I agree with bathing about once a month.

wo wo wo don't listen too that chris who said vets say once a year but once a month will do that is hell not true don't listen too him the right answer is once a year unless your dog gets extreamley dirty
if you wash them more than twice a year they will go all greecy and uncomfotable can't i ash er you i hav done that before BIG BIG! mistake
any way only once a year will do just fine
good luck you seem too be nice

I would say once a month, just make sure you use a gentle shampoo. I have a Bichon and we use johnson's baby shampoo (intended for humans) about every two weeks. His skin doesn't seem to be bothered by it and I bath him TWICE a month with it. Good Luck!

PS. Our vet says it is much better to wash him only once a month so that's why I'm telling you to try once a month. (We don't listen to our vet because we don't like the outdoorsy dog smell our dog gets after he goes on walks with me everyday). Plus, our dog lives inside the home with us.

I usually wash my dog about every six to eight weeks, using a proper dog shampoo; Exmarid. Just sponge him down with a weak Dettol solution if he's really smelly....try not to bathe him too often.

I guess once every 3 weeks.

At most twice a month because shampoo can rob his skin of the natural oils he needs so it's bad to give them too often.

People say you should only wash a dog twice, maybe three times in any one year but i'd say a bit more often is ok, how else are you supposed to keep the little sods clean ha ha. If you're concerned about bathing him so often, get some fullers earth ( pet shops or hardware shops will do it ) and brush this into his coat when he's dirty, leave it to soak in a while then simply brush it out. It'll take all the dirt and smell out of his coat and leave him smelling fresh and lovely! There are also dog deodorants that you can buy from the pet shop to mask that doggy smell.

its recomended you dont wash them more than 3 times a year (unless absolultly nessessary, like they roll in something bad)

if you wash them more often them this their coat stops producing natural healthy oils which help keep their coat shiny

I wash my dogs every 2-3 weeks. I haven't had any problems.

I prefer to let mine dry then brush the mud out of their coats, and I use a spray that kills the doggie pong. As to bathing mine get a bath twice a year.

i have a springer and wash her once a week and have no problems

I do pet therapy visits with both my dogs and one of the requirements is that the dogs have to be well groomed and clean. I give my dogs a bath with a dog shampoo and a seperate dog conditioner once every four to six weeks. Our programme says to only bath the dogs about once every six weeks with the correct dog shampoo - not products for humans or other animals.

The shampoos and conditioners I use are the Fidos brand which you may not be able to get in the US but they are soap free and use things like tea tree oil, or oatmeal which are gentle for the dogs coats and skin. I do not have a problem with itchy or dry skin, and the conditioner smell stays in the coat for a couple of days and leaves the coat glossy.

In between baths I use a groomers trick to keep the smell down - I sprinkle talcum/baby powder with a faint scent onto the dogs and brush it through their coats. There is no smell and we don't end up stripping all the oils out of the coat by over bathing them. If they get dirty we either hose them down with plain water and use a towel to get the worst off - or we wait until they dry and then brush the dry gunk out of their coats.

Good luck.

people like to bathe their dogs inside or outside. I pefer out side so you have less of a mess to clean up. When I wash my black lab. for a dog show, I have a big "tub" like, he's tied to it. When washing the dog talk to them let them know its ok.Before you do that I would put cotton balls in their ears so they won't get water in their ears and get a ear infection. Wear old clothes when you wash a dog, and be prepared to get a bath your self.

i breed and work spainels about every two weeks with a mild shampoo if they get to dirty nothing stops you from swilling them of with water or hosing them down i have done this for year with no problem .

vets say once a year but every month will do

I have to bathe my dog once a week. She doesnt like it, but she needs it. Scrub her down good!! You will be grateful.
