Kitten problems: Expert answers please?

Hello, I have a 5 month old kitten that I treat very well. But I'm a college student and I need to be in bed early. I play with him for at least an hour everyday and the rest of the day I'm not home. After I play with him he usually gets tired and starts falling to sleep. But as soon as I go away and close my door( I have minor cat allergies and I can't sleep with him around) so I keep him out of my bedroom. As soon as I leave him and go to bed he start meowing and does not stop!! It's that sad cry meowing..and he won't stop! He scratches at my door and just doesn't stop....can someone help me? If this doesn't stop I might have to get rid of him..and that would suck because I really like him.

Please DO find another home for him:

- you only spend an hour with him per day
- you won't let him be in your room with you at night

Kittens - and cats - often like to be close to their owners. It's very cruel that you're locking him out of your room. Why did you get a cat if you have so little time to give him and won't let him be with you at night? Sad.

have u tried putting in some of his favorite toys,a bed,and a piece of ur clothing with ur scent on it in there with him?,,that may help.

This is merely a suggestion and NOT expert advice, but have you thought of getting him a companion ? Another kitty to play with when you're not home and after you go to bed might be just the ticket to aleve his loneliness and help expel all of his kitten energy.. :-)

ya know, i've actually heard there is a shot that you can get once a month to stop pet allergies. that might be something for you to look in to.... just a thought.

cats are nocturnal -you can't change nature. find a more responsible owner for the cat. do your "homework" next time you get a pet.

even if he can't sleep in your bed, can't he sleep on your floor? Get some fleece, he'll sleep wherever you put it.

Get another kitty! He is lonely when you are gone and wants "someone" to cuddle with at night. Also try getting yourself an allergy shot.

You would need to teach him that he needs to go to bed at the same time as you do. It is part of educating your kitten to be the way you would like him to be. Make sure he has enough dry food to eat and water and access to his litter box. You might want to consider ear plugs in the meantime. Every time you open the door and let him in, you are re reinforcing his behavior. Most people let their cats sleep with them, I let my cat sleep with me but took me about 2 weeks for her to understand that bed time and getting up time needed to be respected. Ignoring their demands they will eventually understand those boundaries. but if this is something you can not do, then reinforce the rules of bedtime. Getting another kitten may help or make the situation worse. But he/she can benefit from the companionship she/he craves at night. Sweet dreams and good luck! MEOOW!

I think that after u play with him he doesnt have enough
try playing with him in teh room he sleeps in.
then that way u can put him 2 sleep wiuthout waking him while carrying him. So then wait 3 minutes after he falls asleep then slowy creep away.

I to am allergic 2 cats and i have 3. 4 years ago i got 8 ingections in 16 weeks.( once every 2 weeks) They dont hurt tho..
and now im nnot allergic 2 anything.

He is being a normal kitten and only having interaction for one hour a day is not enough attention for a animal especially a kitten. The kitten sounds very lonely and bored. I think it would be best for the kitten if you gave him to a rescue, and allowed them to find him a person that could give more attention. My cats don't like being alone and are very affectionate with each other. I have fostered cats for the human society and while it is true that they are more independent then a dog, one hour of attention will never give him all the attention he needs and deserves.

He thinks you're his mother and wants attention from you. So he's probably going to keep this up until he's grown out of it. I would suggest getting him a buddy, I think that usually works... If you can't deal with another kitten (allergies, school, no time, etc), then maybe you should get some earmuffs or earplugs.

I'm no expert, by the way. Just talking from experience.

i would not recommend another cat b/c they will be up all night playing and knocking things over. it sounds to me that your kitten may be a little bit spoiled. i would suggest getting allergy medication so your cat does not get angry and start tearing the house up. he sounds to be very temperamental. your only fair choice may be having to let him sleep with you.

sorry. he is cat. i have one that disappears for a month, then demands my attention. if i am in bed, he doesnt care.

the other one has to be with me all the time, follows me from room to room.

you cant just close your door and expect it to go to sleep.
give the kitten away, this will get worse.

you could try an older cat, most of them just sleep about 20 hours a day.

and cats are more active at night.

edit - i do not recommend a buddy for your kitten. they will turn your house into a war zone. they fight like pro wrestlers, including throwing each other out of the ring. they race through the place at night.

If the kitten meows and you ignore it he/she should eventually stop. If you make the mistake of eventually going back to the kitty because you feel bad you are reinforcing this behavior.

You should cut the nails too - that is easy to do and is safe if you have an indoor cat - less damage!

Getting a kitten might not have been your best choice as they have lots of energy...good luck!!
