Beagle escaping?

hey. i have a 1 year 5 moths old male beagle. how do i get him to stop wanting to leave the house. yes, he does stay outside. in the yard. me and my mom were just bout to bring our beagle for a walk in the park when my helper was about to open the gate,( my dog was still loose in the yard) and he escaped. my helper tried to close the gate as soon as she saw him coming towards the gate but our dog just pushed through .luckily i managed to run a couple houses to catch him. and he does this all the time. could this mean that our beagle no longer wants to be us ?also whenever we bring him for walks. he doesnt seem to want to go in with us and he wants to be let free to roam the neighbourhood. please help us we dont want to loose our precious chubby beagle.

we do take him for walks. almost 4 to 5 times a week.

I suggest you send your dog for some training. During the training, the owner will learn ways to train the dog. Teach it to sit and stay. It is very useful. Dogs will also learn some commands during the course. I have been on such a course. It is a 10 lesson course.

he's high strung. it does not mean he dis likes you. i have a dog who breaks as soon as the door is opened he comes back after he's run his energy out. talk to a dog trainer.

Is he neutered? If not his hormones are ruling his mind. If not neutered male dogs prefer to roam and run. They can smell females in heat for quite some distance. Also they are at risk for reproductive cancers, prostate problems, and rectal tumors. If he hasn't been clipped do it right away. This should help a great deal with his urge to take off.

Take the poor thing for a walk ! Beagles are scent hounds , He just wants to see(Smell) where he's at!

the only this means, is you bought a HUNTING DOG and expect it to act like a house pet... read up on beagles and what they were bred to do..... bark, run, chase , hunt. follow their noses every where......... a walk on leash is not enough stimulation for your hunting dog.....

Sounds like typical Beagle! Sweet dogs, but they are ruled by their nose and desire to hunt. Training will help but these dogs are hardwired to follow their nose. Obedience work with a good trainer and after your dog has a reliable recall and can pay attention to you (in an indoor training facility) move on to agility-if the dog is sound- but stay at indoor facilities. Keep him busy with training, lots of on leash walks. Keep things interesting for your dog!

Good luck!!! Hounds are notorious for wanting to run off. I have a foxhound who suffers from wonder lust too. I got both my boys Pet Safe Invisible fence collars. It is rather expensive, but it works. Check it out on line. E mail me if you have more questions about it. I absolutely love it. There are NO wires to bury and it is portable.

Oh, and Gary, my foxhound is "full-figured" like his mommy, not chubby. Neutering a hound will not help.

My beagle mix also gets lots of walks/runs/attention. Last night he snapped right out of his collar and ran!!!! It was night and he is black- I was PETRIFIED- I was almost crying calling him- so scared he'd get hit by a car. He ran around in a few circles and then stopped to sniff- I snatched him up and dragged him home.

I think it's just the way they are- you can't give them an inch. It's not he doesn't want to be with you- they just love the outdoors too.
