Basset Hound?

Hello! I have a 3 and a half year old St. Bernard/Lab mix. A St. Labrador, if you will. :-) Anyway, I'm going to be moving into my own house soon several states away from my family. My dog is used to living in a house with my family, and my sisters little beagle/cocker spaniel mix. I'm afraid when we move she will get lonely.

But here is the thing, my dog is very lazy, very aloof, and very "quiet." She is also a big sniffer dog, I think she thinks she is a hunting dog!

I don't want to get like a dog that would drive her crazy. I have been thinking about a Basset Hound. What do you guys think? I've been doing some research but research just isn't the same as hearing it from the mouth of a Basset owner. Would a Basset drive my dog crazy?

I am financially prepared for another dog, I am able to come home at lunch during the day. My dog gets a walk in the evenings, plus toy time. I feed her holistic food. Please tell me about bassets. Other breed recommendations are welcome!

Angels - I'm actually moving out of TN! Haha! I'm moving to FL.

But I volunteer at a shelter now, and will be when I move as well. I am very adament about getting shelter dogs. I would not go to a breeder for a dog.

I own a Basset Hound and it's an experience. As far as the groomer claiming, that they are barkers, well I would have to politely disagree. They do however, have the tendency to bark when meeting new people, or perhaps that is just my dog. Audrey, is very social and has a field day whenever company and new people come over. In my experience I would say they make terrible guard dogs, or again it could just be that it's because of her personality. When Audrey barks, it's only a friendly, "Oh my god new people, I love people," bark, which all of my guests and cats are use too.

She gets along with every type of dog and loves cats.

Now here are the drawbacks, Bassets are suppose to be low key dogs in terms of activity. However, my Audrey has energy that would last for days. So there is always that one dog that breaks the rule.

In theory a basset SHOULD get along fine with your dog, but I think the best thing you should do is look up basset hound rescue groups. There are plenty across the US. They give you the opportunity to foster one to see what the experience would be like for your dog and just for general care of the animal until a permanent home can be found.

Also, as another poster has mentioned the chances of you getting a more calmer older rescue dog would increase, which would help decrease the chance of getting an overactive hyper puppy, such as my 5 month old, Audrey.

lol my basset houd doesnt even know how to howl! haha Report It

get one i have 2 dogs and it is awsome

I don't know enough about Bassets first hand to be specific but I do know that whatever the breed (another St. or lab mix might be great) I would probably adopt a more mature dog as a pup would probably make your current dog crazy. Contact the rescue where you are moving and start looking around and tell them what you need. They should be able to help you make a good match for your other dog and new lifestyle. Sounds like you are a great guardian and if you are by any chance moving to TN our rescue has one good match and I know of another in the area with a great match.

personally, my least favorite breed ( i am groomer and work in a dog kennel). they are notoroius barkers. and when i say bark, i mean it. it is a bark that i could never deal with on a daily basis. it sounds worse than a beagles. its like living with a goose that drools and costs more. it is also a quality that is hard to breed out of them. honestly, you should really think if your dog needs another dog to play with. he seems pretty independent. why dont you wait until you move and then see how he is taking to it. he may be fine without another dog.

if you do get one, i would suggest going to shelters and seeing which dogs you like, then letting the dogs meet and see which dog you dog likes better. if you are set on a breed, there are plenty of breed rescues

get the same dog that u had at home or somthing similar

I have a basset mix and according to the vet he has the personality of most basset hounds. He is very sweet, enjoys company of animal or human, loves to eat anything, and not the most energetic dog around. On walks he will lay down and stop walking when he doesn't want to go any further. He pouts if you do something he doesn't like and doesn't like his feet touched. I love my pup and he is very tolerate of my crazy pom, and seems to tune him out when he is running around in circles. I take in foster dogs for the humane society and he does very good with them. He loves playing for a short time and then he is ready for a nap. I think you would love having a basset hound.
