Questions about Basset hound?

Hi, I have a female basset hound almost 2 years old. She has this odd smell around her that no matter how many times I gave her a bath, she still have. None of my other dogs ever had this distinct smell, is this natural for the basset hound breed? Also, my basset hound has a tendency to lay upside down on her back.....often....

Hmm...I clear her ears about...2-3 times a week. The smell is more like an faint odor if this help.

Yes, both of these are normal for basset hounds.

There are a number of things you can *try* for the smell.

First, have the vet check her over. Odor can come from dirty ears, bad teeth, debris caught in the lips, skin infections, anal glands etc.

Then look at her diet. A lot of basset owners report an improvement when switching to a corn-free food.

You can also try giving her a vinegar rinse or listerine rinse after the bath.

I DON'T SMELL ANYTHING
by Tom Green (not the actor)

When you enter somebody's front door
Where you've not been invited before
Your nostrils may twitch
To a stimulus which
It is only polite to ignore

It is faintly or pungently found
Any place that has bassets around
And stinkily scenty
To all cognoscienti
Betokens the genus of hound

Fastitious folks soon get tired
Of the odor when deeply respired
For all but the strong
The Basset Hound pong
Is a taste very slowly aquired

Antiseptic deodorant foam
Can't stop it corroding the chrome
Defying detergent
It triumphs resurgent
As part of the fabric of home.

When all that you own is imbued
With that which your bassets exude
Blow your nose like a trumpet
And like it and lump it
Or live in a tent, in the nude.

Where is bassetnut? She's the one to answer this question for you. Starred in hopes she'll find it.

are the ears infected? bassets are well known for developing ear infections and their ears should be cleaned regularly. check them. if there is a smell, reddish or yellowish gunk, then take the dog to a vet.

I starred it too. I hope she'll be here as well.

What does it smell like? Fishy? Could be anal glands. I can't figure out how to describe the ear smell... it just smellls. Does she tilt her head to one side? Scratch or rub her ears? Smell them.....Sometimes they don't look dirty they just are... waaay down in there. Labs get like this.

I don't know if bassets have a 'perfume' but I'm sure bassetnut will be here soon to tell us.

(lol I had typed the word coc* instead of tilt and YA sensored it!!!! wasn't being nasty! Sorry, that amused me).

bassetnut could help you out with this question.

Long ears are prone to infection if not cleaned regularly.

They do have a natural "scent" to them, but you can help by feeding a HIGH quality kibble, keeping ears cleaned & teeth cleaned. They shouldn't "stink" just different odor.

You can take a spray bottle and mix a light solution of listerine & water. It will help with smell (don't get in eyes).

Another GREAT smelling thing to do is use "Crown Royal Bodifier" it is a show dog thing, but it smells SO good. Literally you can use just a tad mixed with lots of water and still get the smell that it has. See link below. I use it on mine (I show dogs) but will use it even if I am not going to a show.
