Basset Hound Owners?

I just recently got a basset hound puppy and I have tons of questions.
(1) Is it normal for a basset to sleep all the time? My basset sleeps all day the only time he is actually awake is if he is eating or has to use the bathroom.
(2) Are they harder to housebreak than other dogs? I have had beagles and goldens and they have never given me problems, they pretty much knew not to use the bathroom in the house after the second day they were with us. My basset has been with me for almost a week and will not stop using it on the carpet. Today would be the best example, he didn't go at all outside but two times the rest were inside. I bought a crate for him and he is staying in it for only a few minutes at a time when I like it he just whines and barks until I give him attention. What can I do to make him like it better?

(3) My final problem, everytime I leave the room he whines and crys my mom made a no furniture rule and he doesn't seem to like that very much. He barks and whines all the time. When I walk him he is whining the whole time and doesn't even use the bathroom. I walk him for about 15-20 minutes, 3 times a day. When I am with him he whines. Is this normal? He is almost 10 weeks old if that makes a difference.

Some dogs need to really have encouragement to learn to love their crate. To start, feed him all his meals in his crate. At first, leave the door open, then after a few days, close the door but open it as soon as he finishes eating. After a few days of doing that, close the door and leave it closed for a few minutes after he is done eating, then let him out. Keep increasing the time you leave the door closed after he finishes his meal until you have worked it up to 20 minutes or so. The important thing is to let him out BEFORE he starts to whine. This way it will not seem like you let him out because he whined. Also, give him his treats in his crate. You want to make the crate as pleasant a place as possible. Get a Kong toy and put peanut butter or soft cheese in it, put it in his crate with him at night or if you are going to be gone and he will be left in his crate for a little while.

He is still very, very young and cannot hold his kidneys or bowels hardly at all at this age. When he has to go, he has to go. You should take him out after he eats, when he wakes up from a nap, after he has been playing, he should be going out frequently. As he matures he will learn to hold it longer but for now, you just cannot expect him to hold it over an hour, he does not have the ability to do that.

Bassets can sometimes be a little more of a challenge than some dogs when it comes to house training.

My basset sleeps alot but she also gets alot of walks. If you keep him active he will stay awake. Basseta are stubborn and difficult to train. Patients and consistancy is what worked for me. The more attention you give them for bad behavior the more they will continue to misbehave. Ignore him when he is whining and pet him when he is calm and quiet he will soon learn that he should be calm for attention. Good luck!

well all puppies will sleep alot but my basset hound in 1.5 years old and he sleeps about 70% f the day . and they can be a bit harder then most other dogs so just be patient. also the whining thing is totally normal for basset hounds my basset hound whines 24/7 you can also go and google basset hounds and it will tell you about the breed good luck !

and have fun with your basset hound! they are great dogs.
