My doberman and my basset hound?

I just adopted a 2 year old doberman and tried to make him friends
with my 1 year old basset hound. They are both male and the doberman is neutered while the basset isnt! Therefore the basset keeps trying to hump the doberman who is being ever so patient. Do i have to get the basset neutered? What if that doesnt work? How can i make a hyper basset friends with a peaceful doberman?

Neuter the bassett and do it now.
Better for his health and you may be able to keep both the males.
Dobermans are a very dominant breed and many males will not tolerate another male dog in their home. Many will fight until one dogs kills the other. Neutering helps but does not prevent same sex aggression. It is a very common problem.
I have had Dobermans for 17 years and our rescue will not place one in a household with another dog of the same sex because of the fights and problems. I hope for your sake that you do not have these type of problems.

Neuter him..it will work. Plus its healthier for him anyway.

every time you catch your dog doing this give him a time out its natural for unnutered dogs to act this way the doberman will eventually get tired of this and nip at him ,,specially after a while,,,give them both lots of love they will be fine

Why is your bassett not neutered? All pets should be spayed or neutered.

It sounds like your Basset is trying to let the doberman know who is top dog! Keep an eye on them, but try not to interfer, they will work this out. This would happen even if both dogs where nutered or if they both weren't!

They are just working out the pecking order!

I would suggest going on line, & ask this question there, because even though your Doberman is being alright with this now , he/ she, just might decide to turn out of being annoyed, & then look out. Cause, they'll only take so much. And yes, get your Basset Neutered.

Neutering may help, humping is a sign of dominance. If the dobie is submissive to the basset then you will not have any problems...you can also make it known that that behavior is not allowed by getting a can of some sort, adding dried beans or coins to it (coins work better), and every time Mr. Basset tries to mount, or hump the dobie, tell him no in a loud voice, and throw the can at him....Don't actually hit him with it, just enough to startle him...don't let the two together for a while alone...you need to get your point across before this can happen, or else the basset will be able to get away with this undesired behavior.

Our 11 yr old rotti tried it with our 3 (now 6) month old Great Dane (both un-neutered); I made my "negative behavior" sound and told him "NO, not acceptable"...Barron (Rotti) soon learned that he could not dominate Titan this way.
