HELP!! Basset Hound not getting used to Golden puppy (aggressive!)?

I have a Golden retriever puppy of 1 month 3 weeks and my 8 y/o Basset hound is being aggresive towards him, he's very rough on him and tried to bite him twice. I'm really worried because I love them both!! the puppy loves giving hugs and kisses to my 13 y/o setter who is Ok with him. The pup likes to play with both (at least he tries!), he's very outgoing and not shy at all! What can I do to get my basset used to the new puppy?? are there any tips? ANY info is welcomed! thanks

When introducing a new dog to another, you need to make sure the basset hound knows you arent replacing him. Feed him first, pet him first, always do for him before you do for the puppy. this way he knows he isnt being replaced and can get used to the puppy. when u get home make sure u greet the basset first and the puppy last. eventually he will understand that the puppy is a new member to your pack. Just make sure not to leave them unsupervised at any time so you can correct each dogs bad behavior. remember, a dog only knows your punishing him for what hes doing right at that moment. if you scold him for something he did a few minutes ago or earlier he will only be confused and itll be pointless.

There are no tips one can offer, the only thing you can do is give it time. It may take MONTHS. Just one day they will get along and the biting and roughness will stop. I just got a black lab pup and I am fortunate enough to be able to take her to work with me, the first couple of days, one of the 3 other dogs at work growled and nipped at her, today, they are all running around like crazy! It will happen, just make sure you give them both the same amount of loving and attention. Good luck.

Your basset probably is annoyed by puppies. I have a german shepherd mix that doesn't like puppies. I have four puppies and they all get along, but that's because I make sure that the puppies know their boundaries and that the german shepherd mix does too. If your puppy is jumping in your hound's face trying to lick it...you need to correct that type of behavior. The puppy may not mean any harm, but that is considered disrespectful to dogs. If you don't set boundaries for the puppy. Then the basset hound will. You have to make sure the basset hound has boundaries, too or else he may try to take over completely and just run the puppy completely. Also, the reason your setter is not acting that way is probably because he just willingly submitted to the puppy, or he just has a higher tolerance for puppy behavior than your hound.

Sit and watch tv and have one dog on each side of you. Let them know that this is there side to sit with you. Give them a treat, each one at the same time. Let them know that they are each loved but share you a owner.

Food let the older dog eat here he is at, and give the new dog a new location. Do not let them eat out of each others bowls. Slowly move them closer but never next to each other till they are more friendly.

Play with one by tossing a toy, hold and pet the other dog. Then do the reverse with the dogs. show them they each have a turn and are equals. Make sure the older dog goes first and get first pic. In the wild, dogs and wolfs have a pecking order the older ones go first.

You need to keep them seperate and just keep them supervised until the bassest gets used to him, and for some older dogs, it takes awhile for them to become accustomed to a new family memeber, esp. a younger, hyper one.

I think your older dog doesn't like puppies, some older dogs just are tired and don't want too deal with "kids". Best thing is too just try to not force them together and your puppy as it gets a little "wiser" will decide he doesn't want to try to play with him (BH) if he (BH) is just going to grouch at him everytime he gets close. Try to let them work that out as best you can without allowing him to hurt puppy so puppy figures out on his own to leave the old guy alone. If you hear BH start to growl.... just let him know firmly and immediately that you are not going to tolerate that...( I tell my dog when Im mad at her "Shame on you, no no" in a low voice and she immediately knows to stop what she is doing) then shew puppy away from him to play somewhere else.

It takes an exceptional older dog to tolerate a young pup. Your Setter is exceptional; your Basset is the norm.

When the pup is pestering the Basset, warn him by saying "Settle" or "Take it easy." If he responds, praise him. If he doesn't, remove him and redirect him to a toy or encourage him to play with the Setter. You need to be an advocate for your older dog, so don't put him in the position of getting fed up.

That said, if the Basset is reacting with lunges, growls, or snaps to minor "crimes" committed by the Golden (simply entering the room, playbowing, approaching submissively), this is becoming a major problem. You will need assistance from a behaviorist who can observe the dogs together and give you some tips.
