Basenji shedding?

My Basenji who is now 6 months has been shedding alot for the past week. Up to that point she didn't shed almost at all. Just a few hairs here and there. Now when you pick her up she leaves a bunch of hair. I know Basenji's are only supposed to shed minimally. Is it possible it's just her loosing her puppy fur, or could it be something more serious?

we live in Florida and I read the season change could affect shedding, however the weather has not really changed that much but a few degrees.

Basenji typically shed twice a year and a B pup can shed a lot initially when mor or less losing their puppy hair as the new adult coat grows in. Also some bloodlines do have a thicker coat but the shedding will not be anything like a domestic breed. Is it possible that you are the proud parent of a Basenji mix? You would be welcome to email me a photo .
If where you live has gone from cold to real warm that will also trigger a coat change out.

You might try speeding this process along by using a Zoom Groom (Kong company) or Furminator to pull out the excess hair. A dog may drop a lot of hair as a result of stress but in this case since time has passed, the only thing to do is to think back about events in your pup's life - has anything freaked her out in the last few days?

Some Basenjis do go through a seasonal coat change. Mine does. It's relatively common. I use a rubber curry brush on mine twice a week when he's shedding.

If there are any other symptoms, such as a change in personality, appetite or energy level, you may want to visit your vet. But if I remember correctly mine shed for the first time around this age. He's 7 and sheds about twice a year like clockwork :)
