Basenji???

Does anyone here have a Basenji and if so, would you suggest one as a pet?

High energy and will keep you entertained. You will have to have a sense of humor. Lost china once (well all the time) she was on top of a garage. She could jump climb anything she wanted to. Do not get one if you think it doesn't bark. They screech. If you are intersted in a Basenji check petfinders for basenji mixes. Work with tthe rescue on what the dogs traits are. Im sure there is one out ther for you. AS long as you can be a responsible pet owner no reason not to have one.

Take a look here...

Only if you are an experienced dog owner who is home most of the time.

Basenjis are very "needy" dogs, not to mention they can outsmart a lot of people and need a LOT of attention, exercise and VIGILANT supervision.

Unless you have a HIGH fence that is buried a few feet deep, you cannot leave a basenji unsupervised in a yard. They will get out every time.

They are wonderful dogs but they will keep you on your toes CONSTANTLY.

I rescued a mix, so I did some research on them back then. They aren't an easy dog to live with. They need a lot of attention or they can be neurotic and destructive.

Also, don't be fooled by the fact that they don't bark. They can be noisier than the barking breeds, just different sounds.

On the bright side, they tend to be very clean and intelligent.

Basenji's are great dogs. They are quite energetic and really smart though. They need alot of training to keep their mind active. Most of the typical problems that I get from owners are destruction and health related. They are natural hunters, so you can expect to be free of frogs, lizards, and small rodents in no time. They do tend to tear up anything if they are bored so keep them active. They also are prone to hip displaysia and sight issues as they get older. They are also barkless, meaning they rarley ever bark. They do "yodel" though, which is really cute.

It depends.
They are quite cat-like, so if you want a biddable dog that follows you around, you don't want a Basenji.
If you don't mind a dog that is smarter than 99% of the people you know and would rule the world if it had opposable thumbs, and are dedicated to training, are dedicated to finding a good breeder, are dedicated to socialization, understand the risk of Fanconi, are amused by doggie naughtiness, have a secure yard, are willing to find one with a good temperament, you may just be a basenji person.
They can be aggressive if from poor lines and are not trained and socialized. They take a good deal of socialization, but I love mine.
Find a good breeder and talk to them about their lines and dogs. Check the national breed club. http://www.basenji.org/
if you are in the US. There is a great section on "Is the Basenji right for me?"
Good luck!

basenjis are not for everyone. That being said, they are my favorite breed by far.

I like this website for learning more about basenjis:

www.basenjicompanions.org

If you want to have more detailed conversations about the dogs go here:

www.basenjiforums.com

and finally, here is the site where I rescue the little buggers:

www.basenjirescue.org

It is difficult to get them through their first 2 years, and many people give them up before they become an adult.

Much of the training will be more about training yourselves to live with basenjis. The days of leaving food or trash where it can be accessed by the dog will be over. The days of leaving prized possessions where they can be accessed by your dogs are over. My very well trained basenjis will eat my hat every single time I leave it out. They will bolt out of the door any time it is left open.

study before you decide you want one. You will either only own one in your lifetime which you will give up early, or you will only own basenjis for the rest of your life. The first one is the hardest, but after that raising them becomes easy, and second nature.

You will not be getting anything remotely similar to the temperment of a golden retriever.
