Biting Basenji pup?

Well I just got a new Basenji she is 10 weeks old and she bites all the time. She has been biting ever since we got her.(Aound 2 weeks) What we have been trying to do is when she bites stop her and give her a toy. She bites the toy for a while and goes back to biting us. We think the Biting has to do with th fact she is an African Hunting dog. She is a pure breed. So please we need help with stoping her from biting. Answers are greatly appreciated.

The breed of dog hasnt really got anything to do with it. The substitution thing is a good idea, but lets face it, it just is not as tasty as her human counterparts. What I do when my pups bite, I give a high pitched yelp and walk away ignoring her. Pups do it all the time to warn the other that its biting to hard.
Ur pup will immediatly let go when u cry out.
Pups hate being ignored and she will eventually realise that biting human equals no attention.

Make sure she has plenty to chew on throughout the day. Get lots of chew things and put them all over the yard or house so its easy to find something when those gums start up. Thick doggy ropes are great because it gets down to the gums and massages them.

puppies bite.. it's what they do. Tell her/him NO and put the toy in the mouth. You will have to repeat it several times, but he will catch on. I got a yellow lab puppy for christmas. I actually got him about 2 weeks before and he was already over 2 months old... lots of biting. This is the method I used with him and he stop. The trainer also suggested saying ouch in a loud high pitch voice and that would make them stop as it would be the equal of a yelp from there brothers and sisters. I have mine enrolled in puppy training through PetSmart and it has been the best $$$ that I have ever spent.

Puppy biting has nothing to do with breed. All puppies bite - it's how they explore their world and is normal puppy development. See link for how to deal with normal puppy biting.

All puppies bite, no matter what breed! It's how they play with their litter mates and how they learn bite control.
When she bites too hard try giving a sharp "OW" and then ignore her for a few minutes. If you are sitting down when she does it, fold your arms across your chest and don't look at her or speak to her until she has calmed down. If she gets too excited, shut her out of your company for a few minutes - dogs hate to be excluded.
