Is Basenji very difficult to keep and train? |
I really love the "Barkless" dog--Basenji, and am having serious thought for buying a puppy. But of course, I have to do some research on it before making final decision. I checked out many sites and books, they all have the same conclusion--it's a breed known for being aloof, very dignified, and strong-willed...plus, it takes a lot of time and skills to effectively train this breed of dog; but even intensive and effective training won't guarantee well-behaveness... I had a Basenji mix. Took her to obedience school where she did not do well - even the instructor yelled at her. They are very hard to train. She had attitude, did not like the second dog I brought into the home. She got mean as she got older. Fireworks terrified her and made her act nuts. Our Basenji was very difficult to train. AT some points we thought of giving her back. But after 4 months of persistent training, she is the best dog we have. She is a GREAT dog but you have to know beforehand that it will take a lot of time to train her/him. Report It Your research is accurate!! Would not be my 1rst choice of a breed to get! Hard to train can be persnicity a friend of mine raises these and she doesn't recommend them to very many people, she says that they are very aloof and determined and they are more like cats than dogs, very bad about jumping up on furniture and kitchen tables, etc, WILL NOT go outside when raining Hi Joan Crawford!! Yes.....Is Basenji very difficult to keep and train... yes clever little fellows who always push the limits- that's a Basenji. I will also mention the barkless bit does not mean silent. They can whine, howl & make a vareity of other sounds and some are quite noisy. The new african import lines even have some dog that bark. |
