Is it safe to feed Tuna to my Basenji puppy? |
I want to give my puppy a good quality, nutritional snack and I think Tuna seems like a good idea for this very catlike breed. I have owned a lot of animals and dogs, but I have never really thought about giving a dog tuna. This is my first Basenji, and I think it is probably all the catlike traits it has that gave me the idea to give her tuna. Tuna is fine as a treat, but do not make this the bulk of your dog's meals. Just because a dog is "catlike" does not mean that it has the same digestive system as a cat! Feed your dog dogfood. Canned tuna has high levels of mercury in it. dogs love tuna....treat your doggie I have a Carolina Dog (not to far removed from Basenji) and I like to TREAT with Salmon (and he enjoys it, plus it is good for his coat)... but his FAVORITE thing in the whole world is Carrots!!!!!! Tuna packed in oil is an ok treat but canned salmon or mackeral is even better as well as sardines( packed in oil only). I'm sorry I have no advice about tuna, I'd say it's fine, but I did want to say I agree that basenjis are great dogs, I used to "babysit" a pair of them and they are so neat! Their faces are adorable, their singing is hilarious, and they're so clean looking. :) Oily types of fish, such as salmon and sardines are excellent for a treat. The fish oils contribute to a shiney coat and smooth skin. it won't hurt her any, but dogs really aren't that into fish. There plenty of moist canned dog foods out there that can be used as a treat. Dry food should be the main diet though, to prevent obesity and maintain a healthy mouth. Sure, a little tuna once in a while is fine and most dogs love it (the stinkier the treat the better usually, and fish is about as stinky as it gets). My dogs get a little tuna with their food once in a while and if I make tuna for myself I will pour the water drained from the can over their food (I only buy tuna in water, never in oil). I have a basenji puppy who is 12 weeks old. I just got him. I do not feed him anything now except Eukanuba medium breed puppy food and small pieces of organic cheese. (We only eat organic or all natural food). Basenjis are very catlike but I have never heard about them eating fish. My breeder told me to just feed him puppy food and cheese for now. Later, I can start feeding him veggies and other food. If you really want to know, you should ask your breeder or vet. Usually once a month I open up a can of Tuna and feed it to him with his dry dog food. That way he does not get so bored with his food. It is just something special I do for him because he is such a great dog. I have not tried salmon yet but maybe I will next time. no it isnt, i suggest you feed it with your ***, much more nutritional Yeah why not? it will give him diarhea |
